Cricket 1914

A p r il , 19 14 . THE WORLD OF CRICKET. 87 There was some slight improvement later, but the tourists were left only 149 to get to win, and made the runs for the loss of 3 wickets, Dolling hitting up 74 in just over the hour. Play was continued after the winning hit had been made ; Cody took his score to 66, and Rans- ford his to 62, while Armstrong was stumped for a duck ; but, of course, none of this belongs to the match proper. The local team put only eleven in the field ; but McMahon, who scored his 87* without anything like a chance and by good strokes all round the wicket, was the only man who distinguished himself. When the Australians batted McGregor and Laver put up 94 for the first wicket ; McGregor and Mailev added 120 for the second, and Collins and Trumper 91 for the fourth. The Poverty Bay bowling presented 110 difficulties to the batsmen, the 200 being reached after just over two hours’ play, and the scoring after wards being maintained at the same pace. That the visitors were quite indifferent as to winning was made evident bv the fart that they kept 011 batting so long that Poverty Bay had to go in for only 25 minutes at the close. During this short time 43 runs were scored and five men were dismissed. First Innings. W. At Hastings, February 18 and 19. As was only to be expected, the Australians proved too good for Hawke’s Bay, the chief feature of the match from the home point of view being the excellent batting of the veteran Board, who was top scorer in each innings. Creed helped him to put up 77 for the first wicket in the first, and Fulton batted well in the second ; but the rest did little. Mailev’s googlies worried them all. For the Australians Ransford played a chanceless innings of in . He and Trumper put on 68 for the fourth wicket, and he and McGregor 65 for the ninth. The Australians won by 9 wickets. 62 42 48 26 19 M. A. Noble, c J. Gibson, b Jones E. L. Waddy, lbw, b Scholium C. McKenzie, c Moore, b G uthrie.. L. A. Cody, not out Extras 6 11 6 3 66 461 F. SEVENTH MATCH, v. WANGANUI. At Wanganui, February 24 and 25. Like Poverty Bay, Wanganui is one of the minor associations : but here, also, only eleven men were played. Unfortunately rain marred the game, no play being possible after luncheon on the first day or before two o’clock on the second. The chief features of the drawn game were some effective bowling by Ransford and a biilliant 94 (in 73 minutes) by Trumper. W a n g a n u i . R. W. Orton, Ibw, b Collins H. B. Cave, b Mailey J. M. The Hawke’s Bay bowlers’ analysis available is 10 runs short for the first innings, and non rst as regards the’ second. Ellis took 5 for 50, Napier 3 for 77, Hichens 1 for 56, Fulton 1 for 60. Arthur Sims, the promoter, manager, and captain of the Australian team in New Zealand, is himself a Canterbury man ; and it is no doubt due to his initiative that the team are presenting to the Canter bury Cricket Association and the Canterbury Rugby Union, joint owners of Lancaster Park, the principal Christchurch ground, the whole proceeds of the return match between the team and Canterbury, estimated to produce £300—£400. T h e Bishop's Stortford C.C. (Hon. Sec. Mr. J. C. Atkinson, Bell’s Hill, Bishop’s Stortford) have a list of 26 matches for the coming season. Among the sides to be met are Saffron Walden, Buckhurst Hill, Pallingswick, Harlow, B.S. College, B.S. School, Hockerill, Kensington Athletic Association, Herts C. & G., Mr. W. I. Rowell’s X I, G .E.R ., Easton Lodge, the Storis, Rickling Green, St. Edmund’s College, the Wine Trade Club, M.C.C., and Hillside. The annual Week begins on the August Bank Holiday. “ Tea will be available on Match. Days— but play will not be stopped for the same,” the card announces in bold type. Hear, hear !
