8 6 THE WORLD OF CRICKET. A p r il , 19 14 . The Austral ian Team in New Zealand. FIRST MATCH, ». SOUTH AUCKLAND XVIII. At Hamilton, February 3 and 4. The first match of the tour was one of minor importance, though South Auckland last year won the Hawke Cup, for which the minor associations of New Zealand com pete. They have lost it this season, however, Wanganui easily defeat ing them. In the absence of Laver, Trumper, and Crawford, the visitors had to call in an emergency man, McCall. The turf had been so sodden by rain that matting was utilised. Seven wickets fell for 70 when the local team batted ; but afterwards Loveridge, Hawke, Lafferty, and Turbott played up pluckily, and a very respectable total was achieved. For the Australians Dolling slashed up 81 in 50 minutes, and Collins batted well and brightly for an hour and a half for 83. The game was drawn. First Innings. J. Armstrong, Laver, Mailey, Collins, and McGregor hurried off by motor to Hawera, and the rest had to wait for the afternoon train, so that the earlier part of the match took place with six substitutes fielding. The local side included P. M. Pratt, a veteran now, for years quite Taranaki’s best batsman, the Rev. E. O. Blamires, who scored so heavily in Wellington cricket last season, and B. McCarthy, who twice played for New Zealand against Lord Hawke’s team in 1902-3. Pratt distinguished himself with a capital innings of 89 ; and Blamires made several catches reported as brilliant. Collins scored 78 of the first 128 made by the Australians, who won by 8 wickets. S outh T ar a n a k i X V I. First Innings. Howden and Caleb Olliff, the home side had not the strength in bowling that was at their command a year or two back ; in fact, they had no bowler of first-class calibre at all. All five of the men who had been to Australia played ; and Hemus distinguished himself by a capital century. He was batting in all 171 minutes, hit 13 fours, and gave no actual chance, though one uppish stroke was very nearly a chance to Laver, the bowler. Brooke-Smith, though not appreciating Mailey’s googlies, helped him to add 74 for the fourth wicket, and Brook aided him in a stand of 55 for the sixth, while McCormick and Tattersall added 52 for the ninth. From the outset the Australians were masters of the attack, 69 being up before the first wicket went down. Three •men were out for 122 ; but then Waddy and Armstrong added 199 in double-quick time, Waddy’s brilliant 130 only occupying 90 minutes. Ransford helped Armstrong to add 122 before the big man left for 128, made in a little over a couple of hours. Auckland’s trials were far from ended, for Ransford and Noble punished the worn-out bowling mercilessly, and added 192 for the sixth wicket. Ransford’s 159 was made in 140 minutes, and his hits included 4, 4, 4, 4, 3 off successive balls. The innings closed early on the third morning for 658, and by four o’clock Auckland had suffered defeat by an innings and 221 runs— probably the worst licking the province has ever had. The game was continued after the winning hit had been made. Armstrong took his score to 161, made in 108 minutes, Noble his to 37 ; McKenzie scored 55 Sims 26, Collins 14, McGregor 13, Dolling 2, and Mailey 1*. With extras (33), the total at the close was 370 for 9. But of course what happened after the runs needed to win had been made was merely exhibition cricket, not part of the match proper. McLaren o for 1, Cave o for 11. No analysis for the second innings up to the stage when the match really ended could be obtained, and that for the whole innings, the greater part of which was merely exhibition play, is irrelevant. FOURTH MATCH, v. WELLINGTON. At Wellington, February 13, 14, and 16. Owing to rain, play did not start on the first day till 3.15, and at call of time Wellington had made 119 for 6 on a pitch too slow to be difficult, but so heavy that to get the ball away was never easy. Gibbes, who made 31 in 80 minutes, played the best innings of the day. On the second day McGirr and Robinson, both young players, made a plucky stand of 57 for the eighth wicket, both playing really well. W’ith the worst Of the wicket, and against some capital bowling by the two left-handers, Saunders (formerly of Victoria) and Southall (formerly Taranaki), and some keen fielding, the Australians were dismissed for 124. Southall distinguished himself by getting Trumper and Armstrong with succes sive balls. Wellington’s second innings was a poor display. No one at the outset could do anything'with Armstrong’s extraordinarily accurate bowling, and the fifth wicket fell with only 17 on the board.
