Challenged by Wanganui, they lost the trophy in a match played during the Christmas holidays. The winners included in their team J. M. Hussey, who has played for Hawke’s Bay and Auckland, and H. M. Butterworth, of Oxford and Wilts, now a master at Wanganui College. Hussey bowled with considerable effect. Wanganui won by 10 wickets, but the details of the 3 required for victory when they went in a second time have not come to hand. First Innings. J. AUCKLAND. At Wellington, January 29, 30, and 31. Nothing very remarkable happened in this match, which Auckland won by 33 runs, after being headed on the first innings. Horspool batted particularly well for the winners, making top score in each innings; his 113 included a six and 14 fours, but he gave a couple of chances. Sloman helped him to add 97 for the sixth wicket. In Wellington’s second, Hay and Howe put up 53 for the first wicket ; but after that only Midlane, who showed very solid cricket, Grimmett, a young player, who revealed real pluck and the right temperament for critical occasions, and Robinson, who slammed 21 (5 fours) during a very brief stay, did anything. Wellington could not send anything like their strongest team, a few men whose claims to be considered representative cricketers can be reckoned but very slight getting places. They put up a good fight in the latter part of the game, however, and in the end went down only by 35 runs. Saunders bowled particularly well : Creed played a capital innings of 82 for Hawke’s Bay : and McGirr and Bennett made a fine stand of 137 for the seventh wicket at a time when their side seemed hopelessly in the cart.
