March 15, 1913. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 87 The next table is an attempt to compare the record of the county during the eight seasons with that of the other first-class counties. Played. Derbyshire alone have drawn fewer matches than Northamptonshire. Since they became a first-class county, Northants have met all the counties except Middlesex, and have fared against them as follows :— Matches against. Played. Won. Lost. Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Surrey and Warwickshire were met in every year, but Somerset only in 1912 and Worcester in 1906. Against Somerset, Sussex, and Derby shire they have a balance on the right side, Derbyshire having fallen to them eleven times out of sixteen, while Surrey and Warwick have defeated them eleven times. They have only won one match in each case against Surrey, Lancashire, and Worcestershire ; but the last named has only been played twice. It may be noted here that Northants had never had to abandon a match without a ball bowled. C. J. T. Pool and S. G. Smith have each headed the batting average three times, and Thompson has topped the bowling averages four times: The following table shows who headed the averages in each year :— The name in brackets is that of the batsman or bowler who was actually at the head of the averages, but either played very few innings or took very few wickets. Only one batsman has scored a thousand runs in county championship matches for Northants, namely, S. G. Smith in 1910 ; but W. H. Kingston came very near to it in 1908, with 959 runs. Thompson is the only bowler who has taken a hundred wickets ; but he has done so in four seasons, 1906, 1909, 1910, and 1912. S. G. Smith took 94 wickets in 1909. Twenty-one centuries altogether have been scored for Northants in the championship, seventeen in the last four years, S. G. Smith making seven of them. S. G. S m it h (7). v. North- j ants men have made four against Hampshire and three each against Yorkshire and Gloucestershire. It will be 1seen that Smith holds the record score with his 204 against Gloucestershire in 1910, while Dr. P retty is the only other batsman to score 200 or over. No Northamp tonshire cricketer has made two centuries in one match. The highest total for Northants is 459 versus Sussex t at Eastbourne in 1911, and the lowest 12 versus Glouces- j tershire in 1907.
