Cricket 1913

64 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. F eb . 15, 1913. ORANGE FREE STATE v. NATAL. The Free Staters turned out for their fourth and last match in the Cup series at Bloemfontein on January 7, with about as little chance of registering a win as any side ever had. Cox could not assist Natal, and Davison, the fast bowler, replaced him, while R. H. Blake came in for Chapman. Both the substituted men did good work. The home side left out (or at least lacked) Keith Hill and Van Schalkwyk. Batting first, they lost 4 for 15, Davison taking three of the four. Then the skipper and another Army man, Staff-Sergeant Fisher, improved matters, and later H. W. (known as “ Sonny ” ) Hill and Goddard made some useful runs; but the rest could do nothing with Nourse. There was joy-—tinged with regret, maybe, for Taylor is worth watching— in the Free State camp when the hero of the Johannesburg match left at 14 ; but there after the rest made light of the bowling. The third wicket fell at 60 ; but the fourth (Dan Taylor and Nourse) added 118, the sixth 61, the seventh 57. and the ninth 39. Against a heartbreaking deficit of 275 the Free Staters played up most gallantly, and deserve great praise for saving-—though only just saving— the innings defeat. The chief credit is due to Neville Lindsay and J. E. Jewell, who added 120 for the fourth wicket. Neither gave a chance; Jewell was on top of the bowling all through, and hit fourteen 4’s, driving splendidly; and Lindsay, if less brilliant, played well. Others contributed usefully, though there was no further long stand, and Natal was always winning. Dudley Pearse hit Lindsay’s first ball to the boundary when the visitors went in, and so the match ended in a ten-wicket victory for Natal. First innings. N. V. Lindsay, b Davison ... J. H. None of the Cape Town ■racks took part; but Bowley was a host in himself, hitting finely for 120, and but for Iveith Hill, who went in first ind was unbeaten at drawing of stumps, the Country side nust have won easilv. Transvaal match, anothei (one-day) game was played between the two sides on December 28, and was drawn, though, of course, the result of a mere exhibition match of this type is not a matter ol importance. Commaille, Lewis, P. Hands, and McPhersor showed good form for the home side, while A. H. Coopei was the only Transvaal batsman who did much. Score :— First innings. V.
