With this m ixed match, in which all of the A ustralians except C raw ford took part, the tour was brought to a conclusion. M acartney is said to have “ sm iled sera- phically when he tumbled B ardslev’s w icket down before the b ig batsman had scored.” The G overnor-G eneral's sera> phic sm ile should certainly have been kodaked for the benefit of posterity. Perhaps it was. A fter the match Mr. R. B. Benjam in was presented by the team with a purse of sovereigns and an address, and the side disbanded. Most of them sailed on the 30th September for home; but M acartney was stayin g on in V ictoria for a while. M r . D ia m o n d ’ s T e a m . G . S. D ow n, c E m ery, b S parks A. C. B. T he score is inserted as a curiosity, every member of the Wan derers side h avin g taken at least one w icket during the two innin gs of the R ailw ay team. But som ething very like a parallel occurred during the last E n g lish season, when, after Litherland had put out Sefton for 31 and had knocked off the runs without the loss of a w icket, the Sefton captain, F. Edw ards, conceived the idea of h avin g each w icket taken by a different bowler, and accordin gly took a man off directly he had secured a victim . T h e trick was done, and, more over, Litherland made no more than 77. T here is, of course, an element of fak e about these th in gs; but they have their own interest for m any people.
