A t the Jubilee H ospital Ground, V ictoria (B .C .), September 25, Cow ichan met their powerful opponents on even term s, and started brilliantly. Em ery had one of his off days, and G ilbert Curgenven, the D erbyshire crack, hit three 6’ s and seven 4’s in his brilliant 48, made out of 52 for the first wicket. M acartney and Craw ford had now replaced Em ery and A rnott, and they played havoc with the rest. T h e whole innin gs only lasted 50 m inutes. So well did the P acific C oast champions bowl and field that the ninth wicket o f the A ustralian s fell with only 131 on the board; but D iam ond (early m issed) and Mailey added 77, and the total of 206 proved sufficient for an in nin gs victory. In Cowi- chan ’s second B arclay and Hayward, the latter especially, showed good form ; but M ailey puzzled everybody with his go oglies. T h e A ustralian s won by an innin gs and 29 runs. T h is match had been looked forw ard to with a good deal of interest. C raw ford Coates, the old Ph ila delphia player, chose the C olts’ team; H. B. Hayward, the clever Cow ichan wicket-keeper, acted as captain; and the A ustralian s played without fee or guarantee. On the whole the C olts came out of their ordeal of fire with credit. It was not to be expected that they should make many runs again st the A ustralian bow ling; but A. N. Gardner played a capital first in n in gs of 33, and several of the others showed quite good form . T h e fielding, except for a chance or two m issed, was excellent. Finlavson bowled really well, and will rem ember with pride, no doubt, that he annexed the scalps of B ardsley, C raw ford, M acartney, Mayne, and Cody. Some of these V ictorian you n gsters ough t to do good work in the future. A few— B agn all and Milne notably— are already am ong the best club players of the district; but all are young, and most are quite lads. Craw ford had 18 .vickets for 34 runs, M acartney 10 for 19; but M ailey and C ollin s wrere met with more confidence. Down, it m ay be noticed, stumped four in the second innings. T h e A u stra lians won by an innin gs and 46 runs. C o lts . F irst In nin g s. C. M a rtin , b M acartn ey ......................... 6 D. W . M ilne, b M ailey ......................... 5 A. A u stra lia n T e am . A t the Jubilee Hospital Grounds, Victoria, B .C . September 26 and 27. On the completion of the C olts’ second innings, another was at once begun, one change bein g made in the side. T h e local Press treats this as a fourth innings of the gam e; but this w ill not do at all. T he only way to deal with it (except by om ittin g it altogether) seems to be to regard it as a separate unfinished match. D iamond and Campbell bowled throughout, and again st them the you n gsters found ru n -getting easier. B agn all played a capital innings of 50, and H. Hudson, a very small cricketer, gave high prom ise in m akin g his 31. T he innings was leftunfinished, ow ing to the fa-t that the mixedteam gam ebegan at1.45; but it speaks well for the keenness of the Colts and the good-nature of the visitors that it should have been begun at all.
