TRANSVAAL. As in the Bloemfontein match, Transvaal had not full strength, Pegler, Zulch, and Susskind, besides the older players, being notable absentees. The Newlands wicket, too, is always an asset for the home side; elsewhere in South Africa the malting covers a hard surface, but in Cape Town it is laid on turf, and the ball comes off it very differently. The game was played on December 26 and 27. Batting first, Transvaal gave a disappointing show. Hand and Morkel put up 46 for the first wicket, and this was the best stand of the innings, though Heather (an Australian) and Jackson (formerly of the Western Province, now at Klerksdorp in the Transvaal) made just over and just under 50 respectively. Short and De Smidt were -the successful bowlers. Western Province soon got on top. Commaille was out at 37; but George Hearne (son of Frank) and P. A. Hands (a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford a few years ago) added 69 for the second wicket, and Hands and Conry 70 for the fifth. Hands played a very fine innings indeed, showing masterly ease and a plentiful variety of strokes, and Hearne’s smaller score was almost equally well made. In a minority of 116, Transvaal fared very badly against Smith and De Smidt in their second attempt. The first wicket (Morkel and Hand again) fell at 40; but after that the only stand was one of 33 for the fourth. Jackson hit a 6 and three 4’s in his 28; but recklessness led to his downfall. At half-past three on the second day Western Province had won by 10 wickets. Redick 2 n.b., second. First innings. Second innings. EASTERN PROVINCE v. ORANGE FREE STATE. Unfortunately the Free State could not send anything like their full strength to Port Elizabeth for this match, fixed for December 26 and 27, but all over on the first day. The absentees included Capt. Poyntz, Jewell, Lindsay, Bell, Sennett, and H. Hill. There was no player of experience on the side; even Matthews, who captained, had never repre sented his state before. The home side included no player of great reputation ; but Glisson is a good all-round man, and he showed to advantage in this game. In something under two hours he made 81 (nine 4’s), and in the first innings of the visitors he bowled in deadly form. The captain alone reached double figures then, and the total was only 57. When the Free State followed on four wickets were down for 11, and five for 23; but Wille and Goddard added 30, and Faure and Compton, aided by some loose fielding, hit up 48 for the last wicket.
