Cricket 1913
October i 8 , 1913 . CR ICK E T : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 691 follow him. James would have m ade m any more runs but for his unfortunate accident at B ystock, when in com pleting his century he strained the m uscles near his rig h t knee. T h e Rev. W. J. R ice (221 in 7 innings) and H. J. B ow er (143 in 3) did so w ell when they appeared that they would be more than welcome as regu lar players; but R ice is a school m aster in B erksh ire, and Bow er at B art’ s. T h e form er is a really good bat, and shapes like county form . J. E. H arri son (13 w ickets at 14.53 each) nom inally heads the bow ling; but the brunt of the attack has been borne by the club’ s pro., Snow (45 at 17.42) and C. L . H ughes (63 at 19.35). H ughes had a strenuous season; it was his first year of captaincy, and to some extent the responsibility affected his play. T he best all-round man in the team , he yet had figu res con siderably inferior to those of past seasons, in b a ttin g more especially. T h e second X I won only 2 m atches and lost 8. T h eir b a ttin g was very fair; they averaged about 16 per w icket. B u t they too often fielded badly, and the bow ling was uncertain. F or the poor fielding there is sm all excuse; the side is quite you n g, and the men ough t to field better. J. W. O rdish made a lot of runs, and heads the batting averages (561— 40.07), w ith W ilfrid H ughes (200— 25.00) as runner-up. P. L. P atterson (22 w ickets at 14.09) comes first in bow ling. A rlin g to n a n d L e y to n sto n e __In their 35th season A. and L. had a much better tim e than last year, w in n ing 11 m atches as again st 8 lost, with 4 drawn. T h ey totalled 3004 for 218 w ickets, and their opponents made 2360 for 220, which show s a good m argin on runs scored. J. Hoare cap tained w ell, and did useful work w ith bat (284 runs— average 20.28) and ball (16 w ickets at 15.68 each); but A. B arclay and W alter R uffels, first and second in both batting and bow lin g, were the side’ s backbone. B arclay totalled 377, averaged 29, and took 74 w ickets at 7.27 each. Ruffels totalled 304, averaged 27.63 (he was not out in 9 in n in gs of 20), and took 52 w ickets at 7.71 each. T h e veteran C. Beal (260— 26.00), G. S. C ole (421— 21.05), and C. H. D avis (264 — 12.57) w ere the other principal run getters, no one else besides those mentioned top p ing 120; and Harold Halse, of footer fam e, took 27 w ickets at 8.75 each in 5 in nin gs, but could scarcely m ake a run. J. F. Sharp made most catches (10), A. B arclay ta k in g g, H.. R ichard 8, H. E. B ell 7, and C. H. D avis 6. Littiehair.pton. — N ine m atches were won as again st 6 lost. T h e club had a stron g b a ttin g side, E. C. Mordaunt (total 437) a ve ra g in g 48.6, W. H arris (235) 33.6, C. Pow ell (260) 32.5, R. D avis (343) 28.6, F. E. Rowe (223) 27.9, A. C. Som erset (287) 26.0, E. H arris (430) 23.0., and A. F. Somerset (208) 23.1. C. J. Pearson (19 w ickets at 13.8 each) headed the b ow lin g averages; but A . C. Somerset (41 at 14.3), E. H arris (41 at 19.6), and E. C. Mordaunt (30 at 14.2) did the bulk of the work. T h e second X I won 12 m atches, lost 2, drew 2, and tied 1. E. H arris w as very prom inent in their gam es. W ith a total of 326 he averaged 54.3, and he took 31 w ickets at 8.3 each. R. D avis had an average of 55.3, but this was for only 4 in nin gs. T . M atthews (202, average 22.4, and 25 w ickets at 9.4 each) showed good all-round form , and C . J. H. Pearson took 27 w ickets at 11. 3 each. L a u d e rd a le . — A capital record: 17 won, 9 lost, 10 drawn. O f the 9 losses only 3 occurred on Saturdays, the only day on which the club can p lay at fu ll strength. In Saturday gam es L au derdale defeated Brentwood, E p p in g, K ildare, R iver P la te House, L lo yd ’s R egister, Edmonton, P ad d in g ton, B an k of India, A rchitectural A ssociation , O lympic, and T ottenham House, and drew w ith North M iddlesex, White H ouse, B rookfield, and Northampton Institute. T h e losses were to P arson ’ s G reen, Luton T ow n , and Amherst. T h e tally of T h u rsd ay gam es is: won, v North M iddlesex, Fulham , Southend, and F ortis G reen; lost to W altham stow and Wadham Lodge; drew with Shepherd’ s Bush, P a rso n ’ s Green, and North M iddlesex. T h e Bank H oliday m atches (with L oughton and Witham) were both lost. Honours were easy in the C ornish tour N ewquay and St. Colum b were beaten, St. A u stell and Falm outh won, and draw s were played w ith C am borne and Lanhydrock. H. O. Jones a gain proved a very consistent batsm an, a vera g in g 34.33 on a total of 515, w ith 100* as his highest. H. F. B ritton (250— 83.33) and H. S. B ell (140— 35.00) headed him in the averages, bu t played only a few tim es. F in e all-round w ork was done by E. F. A rnold (584 runs, average 20.13, and 125 w ickets at 9.90 each). H is tale of w ickets looks the more rem arkable as no one else took more than 30. P. E. B ass had ju st that num ber at 20.53 each, C. Lew in 29 at 17 - 79 . H. S. Saunders 26 at 10.11, and A. E. W icks 23 at 8.78. B esides Jones and A rnold, F . Shepherd (532 at 21.28) and T . Sales (546— 20.22) totalled over 500; and W. F. Jenkins (159— 26.50), E. J. A llison (166— 20.75), A. J. A rnold (316— 17 - 35 ), P- E. B ass (275— 18.33), and G. R. C rofts (220— 14.18) also did useful work as batsmen. Britton, Jones, and E. F. A rnold topped three figures, and the h igh est in nin gs of B all, Shepherd, A llison , B ass, and C rofts were of 50 or over. P earl A s s u r a n c e . — Fourteen won, 8 lost, and no draw at all constitutes a pretty good record. F. Hurst was the clu b ’ s ou tstand in g player; he totalled 531, averaged 27.9, made two centuries (on su ccessive Saturdays, 101* v. Phoenix A ssu ran ce and 103 v. L u d g ate C ircus), and took 77 w ickets at 7.5 each. G. E. Johnstone (334— average 20.8) follow s him in the b a ttin g table; and E. A. H arlock (65 w ickets at 7.3) heads him in bow ling. A. H. D octor, S. M aystone E. A. H arlock, A. J. Hurst, and H. J. M cIntyre were all useful batsmen; and Johnstone (19 w ickets at 13.1) ga ve H urst and H arlock aid at the bow lin g crease. T h e second X I won 10 m atches and lost 10. M. B urke (184 runs, average 1S.4, and 22 w ickets at 16 each), W. Green (167, average 16.7, and 33 w ickets at 7.9), W. R. T aylo r 273, average 15.1, and 40 w ickets at 12), and P. Hanrahan (145, a verage 9.6, and 4c wickets at 8.6) made nearly all the runs and took n early all the w ickets for them . W in n ip e g W an tterers. — T h e W anderers won the club cham pionship of C anada as w ell as ta k in g first place in the W innipeg L eagu e. T . Sm ith (317 runs— average 35.22), K . Habershon (185— 26.43), E. C. L i.ver (Z54— 25.40), and R. B ingham (142— 15.77), were their l.igh est r an-jjetters, T . A . D . B evington doing com paratively little. W. L. Price w as their crack bowler; he took 53 w ickets at 4.58 each. E . C. L a ver had 15 at 7.13, D r. S. A . Sm ith 11 at 10.72, and R. B ingham 11 at 13.72. T h ese figu res are for L eagu e m atches only. L aver m ade the on ly century— 101— in L e a g u e gam es; but in an extra match K . Habershun scored 106 and T . Sm ith 101*. W. M urray held most catches (8), T . A. D. B evington and R. B ingham tak in g 6 each. C. J. de B. Sheringham cau gh t 2 and stum ped 3. A cton T o w n . — T h e results were not as good as those of 1912, but were fair, all th in gs considered: 8 matches won (v. Sm ithfield W anderers, C entral Institute, Hounslow, Southhall, E a rly B irds, T urnh am G reen , K en sin gton , N. & S ., and M ill H ill P ark III.); 11 lo st (v. Tw ickenham O rleans, Southall, Turnham G reen, M ill H ill P a ik M id week team , thrice, K en sin gto n , N. & S ., Hounslow, M ill H ill P ark III., Sm ithfield W anderers, and E a lin g Park); 3 H’-' (v. E a rly B irds, Tw ickenham O rleans, and M ill H ill P ark M id-week team ). T h e battin g averages were headed by C. E . Street (34.50), F. W. Hawkins (23.62) came second, and A. Roberts (22-10) third; but these two on ly played 4, 8, and 12 in n in gs respectively, and the captain, C. M. R ich ard son, who had b y far the h igh est a g g re g a te (373) and averaged 19.63, really did the best work. R ichardson has not m issed a m atch for the club d u rin g the last two seasons — that is to say, since the cares of cap tain cy were thrust upon him. O ther useful batsm en w ere B. Ilsley (176 runs— average 13.53) and S. D ean (150— 11.53), while J. O. Jones (average 16.18), C. B rooks (18.50), and E . Shackleford (14.00), p la yin g less frequently, did pretty well. A. Roberts (35 w ickets at 10.14 each), S. D ean (35 at 12.91), and C. M. R ichardson (31 at 15.00) did n early all the bow ling.
