C an te rb u ry did not w in a m atch th is season . A t W e llin g to n their tail-end men failed m iserab ly after C u ff, L aw ren ce, H . C . R id le y , and W ild in g in the first, and C u ff and R id le y in the second in n in g s, had made a g o o d start, and W e llin g to n won b y 6 w ickets. U ph am and A sh b o lt bow led w ell for them . T h e losers lacked D e M au s, L ab att, and P ea rce, three o f their best. D an R eese represented his p ro vin ce for the first time in this m atch ; he w as qu ite a you th then, and his scores (o and 3) did not foreshadow his fu tu re grea tn ess, th o u gh w ith 6 fo r 65 he show ed up w ell as a bow ler. C an terb u ry sen t a more rep resen tative side to D un ed in , bu t lost b y 6 w ickets, D ow n es (10 for 104) b ow lin g in great form . A u c k la n d beat W e llin g to n b y 4 w ickets at A u c k la n d ; the feat o f G e o rg e M ills in p la y in g rig h t th rou gh the hom e sid e ’s first in n in g s o f 235 fo r 106 b e in g the g am e ’s ch ief inciden t. O h lson (49) helped him to add 112 fo r the fou rth w icket. U ph am (51) and S . J. T u c k e r (brother o f the better- known K e n n e th ) added 81 for the seven th w icket a fter 6 had fallen for 83 in W e llin g to n ’s fo llow -on . R . N eill (8 for 51) w a s v e ry d ead ly in the v is ito rs ’ first. G o in g on to N ap ier, the W e llin g to n team h ad the w o rst o f a d raw w ith H a w k e ’s B a y , w ho o n ly needed 15 w ith 4 w ickets to g o at the finish . F o r the v isito rs W . C . S . L e v e rs made 45 and 57* in the m atch , and W . G a rd in e r (form erly o f A u c k land ) 59 and 24. E . R . L u d b r o o k ’s 68 and H n g h B . L u s k ’s b o w lin g (11 for 71) w ere the ch ief fea tu res o f th e hom e sid e ’s cricket. F in e b o w lin g b y L . G rah am (12 for 47) enabled N elson at hom e to defeat M a rlb o ro u gh ; bu t, in spite o f an 8 fo r 51 in one in n in g s b y C o le , N elson w en t under to T a ra n a k i at N ew P lym o u th , W . M ills (of the A u c k la n d fam ily o f that name) ta k in g 8 fo r 47 fo r the w inn ers. S o u th la n d at In v e rc a rg ill beat O ta g o b y 33 runs. R o b ertso n took 12 for 99 for them . F . C . L ig g in s carried h is bat th ro u g h O ta g o ’s first in n in g s o f 115 fo r 58, and A . E . C la r k e ’s 32 w as the o n ly doub le-figu re score in the second in n in g s. T h e season o f 1896-7 w a s a v e ry b u sy one. T h e A u s tra lia n T e am on its w a y hom e from E n g la n d visited N ew Z ealand in N o vem b er, and p la y ed five m atches, all a g a in s t odd s. A b o u t C h ristm astid e a Q u een sland side cam e a lo n g , and p la y ed e ig h t m atch es. F iv e o f these were on even te rm s; but S o u th la n d fielded 18, and g am es at A sh b u rto n and G o re w ere a g a in s t local odd s team s.
