The Australian season of 1913=14. T h e following- m atches have already been arran ged for the coming- A u stralian season. T h e list is not complete, as the dates of T asm an ia v. V ictoria, Queensland v. N ew Zealand, and South A u stralia v. New Zealand had still to be fixed. L a s t season it was stated that a South A ustralian side would visit Western A u stralia early in igi3-4; but nothing- more has been heard of this project lately. T h e Western A ustralian C .A . tried to arrang-e th at the Rev. E. F. W addy’s T eam for C eylon should break its outw ard voyag-e to p lay a w eek’ s cricket in the west; but the offer had to be refused, as it would have meant the curtailm ent of the v isit to C eylon. T h e team w ill probably play a one-day match at Perth or Frem antle; but no serious im portance can attach to this. N ovem ber 21— A t B risban e, Queensland v. N ew South Wales. D ecem ber 5— A t M elbourne, V ictoria v. Queensland. D ecem ber 12— A t Sydney, N ew South W ales v. Queens land. D ecem ber ig— A t Sydney, N ew South W ales v. South A ustralia. D ecem ber 26— A t Sydney, N ew South W ales v. N ew Zealand. D ecem ber 26— A t M elbourne, V ictoria v. South Australia. Jan uary 1— A t M elbourne, V icto ria v. N ew South Wales. January g— A t A delaide, South A u stralia v. N ew South Wales. January g— A t M elbourne, V icto ria v. N ew Zealand. Jan uary 23— A t Sydney, N ew South W ales v. V ictoria. F eb ru ary 6— A t Sydney, N ew South W ales v. T asm ania. F eb ru ary 13— A t A delaide, South A u stralia v. V ictoria. It would appear that Queensland and N ew Zealand w ill meet about D ecem ber ig, as the N ew Zealand tour is to start at B risban e, and South A u stralia and N ew Zealand about January 16, after the M elbourne match. T h e T asm an ia— V icto ria gam e will probably be in F ebru ary, and if South A u stralia groes to W estern A u stralia the v isit w ill almost certain ly be in November. In F ebru ary and M arch, after the programm e is completed, a strong- A ustralian team is expected to tour N ew Zealand. C o lts’ m atches betw een N ew South W ales and V ictoria are fixed for January 1, at Sydney, and January 23, at M el bourne. V icto ria and South A u stralia m ay p lay a colts’ m atch at M elbourne on F ebru ary 13. Cricket in Natal. D urban, Sept. 17, igi3 . T h e cricket season opens here early n ext month, and it is hoped that a start w ill be made with the Senior L ea gu e m atches on Saturday, O ctober 4. On the following- day John Gunn, the fam ous N otts profession al, who has been eng-ag-ed by the D urban C ricket Union as coach for this coming- season, is expected to arrive from Southampton. F or which club he w ill p lay in L ea gu e m atches has not yet been decided. It w ill be remembered th at Georg-e Cox, the Sussex professional, assisted the E scom bes during- his two seasons here. It is possible Gunn m ay be attached to the W averley C lub, the new nam e adopted b y the side called W anderers II. in igi2-3. E n glish cricketers, a full programm e of m atches w ill be impossible. E ach club, however, w ill meet each other club twice, but w hilst in the first round two Saturdays w ill be taken for each match, the second round w ill have to be fou gh t out w ith one Saturday a m atch only, u nless (-very hig-h day and holiday possible is brou gh t into use, which is scarcely feasible. T h e question w ill be decided at the meet in g of the Union called for F rid ay next, when the list of fixtures w ill be finally arranged. K a rl Siedle (Escombes) has resign ed the secretaryship of the Union, and H. A. R ayner (Casuals) has taken the post. T h e new7 secretary spent a summ er in E n glan d last year, when he played pretty regu larly for the fam ous Incogniti; he also went on tour with the G entlemen of W arw ickshire, and appeared for Hampstead in the H ampstead week. A lto geth er in ig i2 he took I2g w ickets in club cricket in E n glan d at a cost of less than 16 runs apiece, whilst he scored 7g7 runs, averag ing- just over 18 an innin gs. He was very su ccessfu l with the ball for the Gentlemen of W arw ickshire, when he met several well-known first-class am ateurs and professionals. C on siderin g the m iserably wet summ er he certain ly came off rem arkably well. T h e com in g v isit of the M .C .C . is, of course, the great topic here. People talk of the team w ith bated breath, though why, I don’t quite comprehend. It is certain ly a form idable combination; but th at only m eans we shall see good cricket, and even if South A frica fails to win the rubber it w ill be no d isgrace, so that only we put up a good fight. T h a t’s the question which every one is askin g. C an we put up som ething lik i n. show , w ith so much youn g talent to depend upon ? I don’t see why not, and I think that time w ill prove we can. T h ere is talk of the p ossib ility of Percy S herw ell’s com in g out of his retirem ent to skipper the team. It would be a gran d th in g for South A frica if he did, for I hardly th in k Herbert T aylo r, sterlin g you n g cricketer th ough he is, has quite sufficient experience for so responsible a job. G. A. F au lk n er would come out under certain conditions; but the South A frican C ricket A ssociation have determ iaed not to b rin g over any South A frican s from E n glan d for the tests. U n less he p ays his own expenses, we shall hardly see him out here, for whai patron of the gam e is a o in g to part with five or six hundred pounds in order to m ake such a th in g possible? A s regards Sherwell, he holds a good position on the R and as m an ager of the “ C ity D eep ,” and it was h ard ly lik ely he was g o in g to throw up about .£200 a month in order to go to E n glan d last year. B ut p la yin g in a few m atches out here is a different matter, so there ought to be some hope of seein g him a gain in harness. T h at w ould nip in the bud both W ard’ s and N icol’ s chances of ap p earin g in the tests; but I am sure these two undoubtedly clever stum pers would be pleased to stand down in the event of S herw ell’ s a gain don n in g the gloves. Our four N atal internationals w ill a gain represent their old clubs. Nourse and Cox w ill assist G reyville. Carter will take over the vice-captaincy of the Z in gari, and T aylo r w ill skipper Queen’ s Park. V ic Robbins, the prom ising you n g batsm an of the Zingari, has m igrated to A ustralia, and we' ou gh t to hear som ething of him from there before long. Practice at the nets b egin s next Monday, and this season prom ises to be a record one as far as Durban is concerned. I shall have som ething to say about M aritzb urg and Northern D istricts cricket in m y next notes. F r e d e r ic k S e t a y . As last year, there will be seven clubs in the Senior It is lik e ly that E sse x m ay run their second X I . in League, though owing mainly to the coming visit of the the M in o r C oun ties C h am p io n sh ip next y ea r.
