T h ree one-day m atches were played at W inni peg, as at Chicago. T h e first was a rem arkable game. T he A ustralian score was kept down to 112, and of these M ayne, who played rig h t through the in nin gs, made 58. He and C ody put up 47 for the first w icket; but the rest slumped, and it was only a ninth w icket partnership of 27 bv M ayne and D iam ond that took the total into three figures. P rice and Sear bowled capitaily. Before this the W innipeg side had been put out for 48, M ackintosh m a k in g 17 of the first 19. When they went in a gain they were quite helpless again st C raw ford and M acartney. T h e first five w ickets fell w ithout a run, the sixth at 1, the seventh at 5, and the eighth, ninth, and tenth at 6! T h e “ Bulletin ” of W inni p eg is very severe on the local men. T h e second innings, it says, “ w asn ’t even bad, it was absolutely p u erile.” “ W innipeg did not bat a second tim e........................They sim ply walked in and out in solemn procession.” Well, w e ll! T h e y w ill survive all this. A fter all, in quite recent years, N otts have been put out for 13 and Northants for 12. No one would put a W innipeg team on the same level as either of these sides; but if the men are not first-class cricketers they are all capable players. B evington has an E n g lish record to answer for him; Mackintosh, Laver, and F elstead are all good bats; W right can hit like a horse kickin g. And the others are not duffers, though appear ances may be again st them this time. T h e Australians won by an innings and 58 runs. W innipeg . First Innings. Second Innings. T. A. D. T h is time a better show was put up. Felstead, except for one easy chance in the slips, batted well, and he and Sm ith put up 40 for the first wicket. M ayne and C ody knocked off the runs needed for victory before they were parted; how many they actually put up the report does not state. M ayne ga ve two chances in his 151, but played finely apart from these. M acartn ey’s 34 included a couple of 6’ s. W in n ip e g . The Australians went in again; but their second innings cannot be regarded as part of the match. It was merely an exhibition. Down scored 82. The total was 210 for 8. Sm ith included b ein g the C .P .R . man, so that in all 31 W innipeg players were put through their paces in the two gam es. Lum bert, who should have played, m akin g the local team an X V III, was injured at practice beforehand, a ball running up the handle of his bat and g iv in g him a n asty blow in the eye. M ackintosh batted very well, and M ortimer, a veteran of 69, earned great credit by sco rin g 7*. T h e first five A u stra lian w ickets went cheaply; but then M acartney was thrice m issed. Em ery and D iam ond hit out well. T h e latter was cau gh t by F elstead at short-leg; but as Felstead chanced to be um pirin g, not p layin g— he must have forgotten that fact — the A ustralian skipper took 4 instead of an immediate walk to the pavilion.
