H in du s. A t Bom bay, Septem ber i i and 12. T h e P residency lacked their grea t man, M ajor J. G. G reig, as well as Col. R. M. Poore and H. E. Cheetham . T h ey were captained b y F. L. Sprott ,who won the toss from P ai, and took first innings. C hristie and Stilem an added 46 for the third w icket; but most of the others failed to get on terms with Baloo and Chanda R ana— the latter a new man in these m atches— on a slow w icket. T h e H indus were more a ggressive, and made an excellent start, P a i and D ivekh ar sendin g up 80 in 70 m inutes before th ey w ere separated. P ai played fautless cricket, but D ivekh ar had a little lu ck. Sempre, the K arachi player, also batted well; he was not out for 26 at the close of the day, when the H indu score stood 156 for 7. Next m orn in g he soon went, but Baloo hit out, and the total reached 171. In arrears of 52, the Presiden cy never looked like g e ttin g on top; their w ickets fell at brief intervals, and though the tail did a trifle better than the earlier batsmen, the first five w ickets realisin g 45, the last five 66, no one topped 20, and the lo n gest stands made were 23 for the eighth w icket by C olbeck and W ilson, and 22 for the tenth by the latter and B yford. T h e old C antab was out to what m any considered a rank bad decision. D ivekh ar stumped him at the second attempt; he was back in his crease, it is said, before the bails were off. T h e H indus easily hit of the runs D eodhar battin g very well indeed. He and Chanda R ana, who had 8 for 61 in the match, are distinct additions to their side’s strength. P re sid e n c y . T h e H indus first appeared in the B om bay T ournam ent six years ago, the M ahommedans as recently as last year. Now these two sides are found com peting in the final, after disposing of the Presiden cy and P a rsi team s and th ey deserve no end of credit for the m arked advance made in their cricket. T h e M ahommedans sustained a grea t loss through Saleh M ahom ed’ s b ein g down w ith m alaria; they were bound to m iss his bow ling. On the H indu side S. M. Joshi and N . H. K h arw a replaced Gunpat and Shivram . K . Seshachari was one of the umpires. If he had been k eep in g w icket for the H indus there m igh t have been few er extras. Pai won the toss from A li, and the H indus took first innin gs. Deodhar played a capital gam e, and had good aid from Mehta and Sempre. A t lunch the score was 126 for 3, but afterw ards a rot set in, and of the rest only V ithal, who batted an hour for 24*, did anyth in g. F eroze K h an took three w ickets cheaply, and T am boow alla bowled w ith grea t steadiness, though he failed to get a w icket. T h e followers of the Prophet made a bad start. A t the call of tim e they had lost 6 for 77. N ext m orning a b ig improvem ent was seen. Patel and Shaikh Mahomed Khan took the score to 115— 43 for the seventh w icket— before they w ere parted, and the latter and N azir Hussein added 36 for the eighth. In the event the total fell only 5 short of that of the H indus. N azir Hussein was so badly battered about the hands that he fainted on reach ing the pavilion. T h e H indus’ new bowler, Chana Rana, again did fine work. V ith al, the not out in their first in nin gs, was sent in w ith D ivekh ar, and they put up 51 before the H indu w icket-keeper left. V ith al and D eodhar added 68 unparted before call of time. Deodhar was out with only 4 put on next m orning; T alp ad e and V ithal added 33, and then the latter was out for a perfect 78, made in 134 m inutes, with nine 4’ s. T h e H indus were doin g their best to force the gam e w ith a view to declaring; but the Mahom- medan bow lin g (in spite of the fact that Shaikh Mahomed had had to retire ill) was too good and the Mahommedan field ing too keen for runs to come fast. M ehta and T alp ade added 43, and P ai made 28 out of 55 while in. T h e in nin gs was declared at 254 for 8, and at 2.50 the Mahommedans went in to get 260 for victory in about 200 m inutes. “ An obviously im possible task, says the “ B om bay C hron icle’s ” scribe. Well, sc a rc e ly ! A difficult one, no doubt. No real attempt was made to g e t the runs; but in p la yin g for safety
