682 CR I CK E T : A W E E K L Y RECORD OF THE GAME. October 18 , 1 91 3 . from a bow ler’ s standpoint. K a n g a proved unplayable, and C olbeck was the only man to reach double figures. F o llow in g on, the P residen cy batsm en did better on a w icket which was im proving all the time. G reig and H aughton put up 84 for the first w icket; but these two and Poore were all out with 93 up. Salter (one 6, four 4’ s), Stilem an, and D obbie alone did a n yth in g afterw ards, and in d rizzlin g rain, which had come on soon after the 100 was posted, the P arsis won by an in n in gs and 29 runs. K an g a, quite the hero of the gam e, sp lit his hand badly in catch in g Stilem an, and had to leave the field. P a r s is . Dr. H. 1 ). Kanga, c M cCall, b - . V azifdar, c Poore, b Dobbie 12 T. The Quadrangular Tournament. M a h o m m e d a n s v. P arsis. A t Bom bay, Septem ber 8, 9, and 10. T h e refusal of M ulla, their w icket-keeper and b ig hitter, to p lay weakened the P arsis; and C anteenw alla, who took his place, though he allowed few extras, made m istakes which handicapped his side. Warden w as su fferin g from lum bago, and would have preferred to stand down, but the selection comm ittee regard ed him as indispensable. T h e w icket was very queer after heavy showers on the first day, and runs were hard to get. A li won the toss from K a n g a , and the professors of Islam had 4 down for 16. T h e fou r included their crack, U su f B eg , of Poona, who has scored seven centuries this season and totalled over 1,000 runs in all. Feroze Khan, o f K ashm ir, and N azir Hussein, the D elhi batsm an, here put up an excellent stand. T h e y added 43 together. Once they were separated no real resistan ce was made. N azir Hussein hit a 6 and three 4’ s. T h e P a rsis started little better. F ou r were out for 21, and Warden and M eherhom ji were two of these. A t 45 K a n g a left, h a v in g made a capital 33 out of 44 in 75 m inutes. V azifdar stayed with K ap ad ia, who played really first-class cricket for his 26, unm arred b y a sin g le bad stroke, to add 25; and P arekh m ade a useful 19. T h e P arsis led by exactly that number. W ith only a few o. Dobbie ............... 18 Haughton ........... 18 Twiss .................. 18 m inutes left for play A li went in him self and took Tam - boowalla, a tail-end man, as his partner. T h e Mahom- medan captain was clean bowled b y a fine ball from Warden; T am boow alla Succumbed to K a n g a ; and at call of time the score was 13 for 2, the followers of the Prophet still bein g 6 behind with 8 w ickets to go. T h e arrears were but barely cleared off next m orning before the third w icket fell, and Feroze K han, who followed in, w as out first b all to Warden. A t this stage a Mahommedan victory looked an yth in g but likely. U su f B eg made 16 of the 18 added for the fifth wicket. Patel who played very steadily, and N azir Hussein put on 27 for the sixth. T h e seventh also fell at 66, and the lead then was only 47. Saleh Mahomed K h an , the K ashm ir all-rounder, hit out and made three 4’ s in his 20, of 29 added for the eigh th wicket. Shaikh A ziz, of Bombay, and Shaikh Mahomed, put on 16, and the latter and M ahom ed Irfani made a plu cky stand of 27 for the last. T h e P a rsis needed 118 for victory. S co rin g ruled slow at the outset, for the w icket was n astier than ever m any balls k ick in g . K a n g a and M eherhom ji took rather more than half-an-hour to make 14. Then the latter was out, p la yin g on to S h aikh Aziz. D river came and went, beaten by the sam e bow ler without a run added. Warden was out to a fine catch 6 runs later. Six more, and K ap ad ia had gone. B u t K a n g a was still there, and in him P arsi faith was firm. T hen the sheet-anchor went. K a n g a attempted a pull, and the ball shot and beat him. V azifdar was out a run later— 6 for 27. Now came a stand, and with the aspect at its gloom iest hope rose again . Parekh and Elchidana played very finely indeed. T h ey refused to be tempted b y M ahom ed K h an ’s bum ping off theory stuff, and ch an ges of bow lin g had no effect. B y the end of the day they had added 52 and were still together, the Parsis then n eedin g 41 for victory. Seven byes next m orning took them nearer; but at 91, h avin g added 64 in all, the pair were separated, and 3 runs later Parekh folowed E lchidana to the pavilion. C anteenw alla went; but a m issed chance b y Irfan i at the w icket ga ve E lavia a life, and there was still some hope. B ut M irza played on, and the M ahommedans V o n a grea t stru g g le by 18 runs. T h e y owed their victo ry chiefly to th eir fielding, which was far better than that of their opponents. Good as W arden’ s figu res were, they ou gh t to have been m uch better, for several catches were m issed off him. Shaikh A ziz and Saleh Mahomed K h an were better suited by the bumpy w'icket than any of the P a rsi bow lers, none of these bein g fast enough to take advan tage of it. M a h o m m e d a n s .
