Cricket 1913
September 27, 1913, CR I CKET : A WEEK L Y RECORD OF THE GAME. THE SCORE BOOK. Grantham and District (XVI) v. Sir A. Priestley’s XI. The annual match at Grantham (September 11 , 12 and 13 ) was favoured with glorious weather. The game was very interesting, and the local team, though they had the advantage of odds, deserve credit for defeating so strong a side. A. C. MacLaren and L. H. W . Troughton could not play owing to injuries, much to the regret of the spectators, who have seen both before and Wanted to see them again. After the local team had made 207 , it was surprising to see Sir Arthur’s combina tion of talent skittled for 98 , but Appleby (5 for 23 ) bowled splendidly and Hilson (5 for 63 ) only less well. A second total of 198 by the XV I., W . E. Thompson well to the fore with 41 , left the visitors with 308 to get for victory. M. C. Bird played a great innings, hitting a 6 and nineteen 4 ’s ; but only A. W . Carr at the outset and the captain himself later on gave any efficient aid, Applebv (5 for 44 ) again bowling effectively, and Grantham won by 66 runs. For Sir Arthur Priestley’s side D. W . Carr took 13 for 142 in the match, L. A. F. W eigall 3 for 33 and M. C. Bird 3 for 38 in the first innings, J. R. Mason 5 for 25 and A. W . Carr 4 for 20 in the second. Hilson’s figures for Grantham were 7 for 98 , and Riley took 3 for 44 in the second innings. G r a n t h a m a n d D is t r ic t . T. H. Bowman, b D. W. Carr ... 1 c D. W. Carr, b L. Weiga'l... 22 W.
