Wilkinson, 10—2—28. Probably the student of cricket figures alone will care about the table following. It needs study; a glance will reveal nothing. But it should repay st udy. Especially noteworthy is the fact that even the great bowlers owe much to their days of partial failure—the times when thev took only one or two wickets in an innings. Albert Relf’s is a case in point. He had 14 times one wicket in an innings, and 13 times two wickets—thus 40 of his 141 were taken at such times. There were in all 74 instances of 10 wickets or more by a bowler in a match, Hitch claiming seven of these, Dennett and Thompson 6 each. Two bowlers who took over 100 wickets—Drake and Newman— never got 10 in one game. Newman and Relf never had as many as seven in one innings. No Essex bowler took more than 5 in an innings. Dennett, Dean, and Pearson were the only men who took 9 wickets in an innings, and in Pearson's case it was in a twelve a side game. Dean took 17 in one match—v. Yorkshire at Liverpool. Dennett had 15 in one (v. Warwickshire at Coventry), and Tarrant 15 in one (v. Hants at Lord's). Razor Smith took 14 v. Sussex at Hove. Dennett (twice), Blythe, Fielder, Hitch, and Tarrant had bags of 13; Dennett (twice), Hitch, Huddleston, S. G. Smith, Wells, and J. C. White of 12. The Oxonian, Melle, is the only manof the 51 listed who never bowled in an innings without taking a wicket. Dennett only twice failed in 41 innings, J. C. White twice in 29, D. W. Carr twice in 18; N. J. Holloway and Iremonger only thrice each, Gange, Hitch, Thompson, Tremlin, and Wass only four times each. On the other hand Rhodes went on in 20 innings without success, generally only bowling a few overs, of course, Cox and Woolley in 19, Brown, Drake, and Heap in 17, Vincett in 16, and A. Jaques, Pearson, and Robert Relf in 15 each. F ootball and H ockey R ules . Copies of football (both codes in one booklet) and hockey rules can be had of E.
