Cricket 1913
September 20, 1913. CR I CKET : A WEEK L Y RECORD OF THE GAME. 635 innings, and lowering 7 for 13; but he was always getting wickets, and was a very valuable asset to a weak side. Newman had 7 for 33 v. Dorset at Poole, but on the whole fell below his best as a bowler. The other sides may be dealt with very briefly. Y o r k s h ir e II. played four matches. Oldroyd, Holmes, Birtles, Bates, H. C. Stanley, and R. W. Frank were their chief batsmen. Bayes was not very effective as a bowler; but Gill in one match v. Lancashire II. and Smith in one v. Surrey II. showed to great advantage. L a n c a s h ir e II. had home and home games with Yorkshire II. Cook batted and bowled well; W. Tyldesley made a century in his one match; and J. Nelson and F. B. Scholfield showed some form. N o r t h a m p t o n s h ir e II. and W a r w ic k s h ir e II. twice met. Thorp scored a century in one match for the former side, and L . E. Holland batted well; of the Warwickshire men only E. Rogers (69 at Northampton) and Taylor (5 for 34 at Edgbaston) need be mentioned. THE MINOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP. 'd a * 9.3 a tic o.S c £ Obt. The two " no result ” matches were Northumberland v. Staffordshire at Newcastle and Durham v. Cheshire at Blackhill, both on June 23 and 24. Outside the championship there were 17 matches which fall under the head of second-class cricket, though, in my view, one of them, Scotland v. Northampton, should have been ranked as first-class. As it was ruled out, however, it seems best to include it here. These sixteen were : M.C.C. v. Bucks, Cambs, Devon (C. & G.), Dorset, Herts (2), and W ilts— seven games. Durham v. Northamptonshire, Glamorgan v. Mr. H. Webb’s Team, Scotland v. Northamptonshire, Staffordshire v. Free Foresters—four games Lancashire II. v. Yorkshire II. (2), Northamptonshire II. v. War wickshire II. (2), and Surrey II. v. Yorkshire II. (2)—six games, This gives a full total of 102 matches. In these well over 500 players took part. But of these many played in only one match, others in two, three, or four without achieving much. The averages which follow later include everyone who played as many as ten innings or took as many as ten wickets, with a selection of the more successful among those failing to qualify according to this standard. There were in the 102 matches the following : TOTALS OF 400 AND OVER. 509 (for 7 wkes., dec.), Northumberland v. Cheshire, Newcastle, July 16. 505 (for 9 wkts., dec.), Herts v. Bucks, High Wycombe, August 18. 00, Bucks v. M.C.C., Lord’s, August 21. 466, Monmouth v. Cornwall, Abergavenny, August 8. 462 (for 9wkts., dec.), Norfolk v. Cambs, Cambridge, August 6, 7. 4O0 (for 5wkts., dec.), M.C.C. v. Dorset, Lord’s, August 15. 449 (for 7wkts., dec.), Beds v. Suffolk, Bedford, July 2, 3. 444, Durham v. Cambs, Cambridge, July 7. 431, Herts v. M.C.C., St. Albans, June 30, July 1. 410, Surrey II. v. Kent II., Oval, June 16, 17. In nine matches over 1,000 runs were totalled. It is to be remem bered that each of these games lasted only two days, not, as in first- class circles, three. SECOND-CLASS MATCHES OF 1,000 OR MORE RUNS. 1,095, for 23w., Bucks v. Herts, High Wycombe, August 18, 19. 1,055, for 32w., Berks v. Devon, Reading, August 13, 14. 1,054, for 30 w., Surrey II. v. Kent II., Oval, June 16, 17. 1,041, for 30 w., Cambs v. Northumberland, Cambridge, August 18, 19. 1.033, for 38w., Berks v. Dorset, Reading, August 4, 5. 1.014, for 28w., Norfolk v. Herts, Norwich, August 4, 5. 1.014, for 3 1w., Bucks v. There was low scoung at times, of course, but the pronounced failures were not very numerous. The lowest total of the season was the 31 of Cornwall v. Monmouth at Penzance (July 11). The others not exceeding 50 were Monmouth’s 43 v. Cheshire at Newport (August 13), Devon’s 47 v. Monmouth at Exeter (August 14), Hertfordshire’s 47 (one man absent) v. Norfolk at Bushey (July 18), and Norfolk’s 50 v. Staffordshire at Stoke (July 22). MEN NEVER ABSENT FROM THEIR SIDES DURING THE SEASON. B e d fo r d s h ir e —E. E. Apthorp (capt.), Holdstock, W. E.
