Cricket 1913
600 CR I C K E T : A WE E K L Y RECORD OF THE GAME September 6 , 1913. Surrey II. v. Wiltshire. At the Oval August 2 5 and 2 6 . The home team included quite a number of young players, three of them school boys. But for a stand by Abel and Peach they would have been out for a very paltry total before some good bowling by Mitchell and Newman. Thanks to Captain Bond and a stand by Brown, who played a very steady game, and R. W. Awdry, Wilts had a lead of 4 9 at the end of an innings each. But this! was nullified before olosie of play, M. Howell and Cook giving Surrey a good start, which Cook and Abel followed up, with the result that the score was 1 1 4 for 1 , and Surrey had a lead of 6 5 with 9 to go when the game restarted on Tuesday. Runs came fast then. Abel reached 1 2 6 after only 7 5 minutes’ batting, one 5 and twenty-two 4 ’s included in his dashing effort, and Burrows and Wood both hit well. Rutty declared at 3 8 8 for 5 , setting Wilts 3 4 0 for victory. So good a start was made that this seemed quite probable, C. S. Awdry, quite out of luck in earlier matches, and Captain Bond putting up 1 0 3 in an hour. Awdry got his 1 1 5 in 1 0 5 minutes, hitting a 5 and thirteen 4 ’s; but there was no long stand after he and Bond had been parted, only Newman and R. W. Awdry staying to make more than a few, and Surrey won by 71 runs with time to spare. S u r r e y it. First Innings. 8cc>nd Innines. M. A t Hastings, Augu&t 2 8 and 2 9 —no play on third day owing to rain. Vine’s benefit, and he deserves a bumper but it is to be feared will not get his deserts, for gate! were not big, and rain made one day a total blank. The game began sensationally, for Holloway got Rhodes, Denton, and Kilner out very quickly, and 3 were down for 2 0 . Then Hirst joined Wilson, and they stayed together 3 hours and added 2 1 2 . Caution itself at the outset—-it took him 1 6 5 minutes to make his 5 0 —Wilson later on hit out, as he can when he chooses, and added another 5 0 in 4 5 minutes. He was missed in the slips at 3 4 . He reached his hundred before Hirst, though at one time the Kirkheaton man was well ahead of him. A dozen 4 ’s were included in his 1 0 8 . Hirst, who did not give a chance, was 1 2 9 * at close of play, and carried his bat for 1 6 6 on Friday. This is the highest score made for Yorkshire this season. He was missed at 1 5 1 , batted 3 1 0 minutes in all, and hit nineteen 4 ’s. Haigh helped him to add 5 8 . It should have been said that play on Friday did not start till 3 . 3 0 , owing to heavy rain in the morning. Sussex had an hour’s batting before the close; on Saturday heavy thunderstorms made play im possible, the water standing in pools on the ground. Y o r k s h ir e . At Taunton, August 2 8 , 2 9 , and 3 0 . Somerset, who lacked P. R. Johnson, were quite overmatched in this game. Only Hylton-Stewart, who played well while others were failing in the first innings, and Robson, who in the second hit 5 1 (eight 4 ’s) in 4 0 minutes, did anything with the bat for them. W. B. Burns and the veteran Burrow., (who, as was the case a few years ago, took his hundredth wicket at his last chance of the season) bowled finely for the winners; but the great feature of the game was H. K. Fob/ter’s century. He made his runs in under three hours without a chance, and hit fifteen 4 ’s. Play on Friday was not possible till 4 o’clock, owing to rain ; then Collier, Burrows, and Bale scored fast, the bowler hitting one ball into the Tone. Worcestershire won by an innings and 3 5 runs.
