Cricket 1913
September C, 1913. CR I CKE T : A WE EK L Y RECORD OF THE GAME. 599 The eighteenth annual tour of the Old Rossallians (June 30— July 19) must be reckoned a big success. Weather was good ; the cricket shown was good ; and the side won 6 and only lost 1 of 9 matches played. Centuries were scored by W . F . Parrington (two), A. S. lidge, H . C. Edge, T. A. Higson, and S. F. Peshall. Farrington was not available in the last week. Higson very seldom failed, as. his scores— 37, 68, 44, 10, 33, 124, 49, 24, 23*, 16, 16, and 9 show. For probably the first time in the 18 tours, however, he was beaten in the matter of wickets, A . S. Edge (who took 13 for 52 at Sleaford) having 67 to his 52. B a t t in g A v e r a g e s . Sewell got his 1 1 5 in 1 3 5 minutes, with two 6’s, a 5 , and ' thriteen 4 ’s. His innings finished with the two 6’s and a hit intended for another, but the ball aspired too much skywards, and gave Astill the chance of a c. and b. He and D. II. Field had added well over 1 5 0 runs. Field’s 1 1 6 were made in 9 5 minutes, and eighteen 4 ’s were in cluded. Hazelton (twelve 4 ’s) and the veteran Mat Wright (nine 4 ’s) also lashed out vigorously. M.C.C. made 1 4 4 for 2 in 8 5 minutes, so that the day’s play, though slightly shortened by bad light, produced 6 3 4 runs. On Saturday the M.C.C.’s first innings closed for 3 5 1 , everyone scoring and ten men making double figures, but no one exc >pt Major Thomson reaching 5 0 . They had to follow on, and, thanks to splendidly effective bowling 'by D. R. Osborne, the Ealing crack, were all out for 1 0 5 , Bucks winding up their season with victory by an innings and 3 4 runs. At Hitchin, August 2 5 aud 2 6 . Runs 011 the first day never seemed easy to get. But a glance at the score sug gests that the home batsmen exaggerated the value of short singles; four of them were run out, and the four included Household and Titchmarsh, the chief run getters of the side. Thanks mainly to Golding, who made a level hun dred (but did he run two or three partners out?), and tq Burton, Herts achieved a substantial lead by call of time on Monday. On Tuesday R. H. King, an old Eastbournian, hit 2 5 off one over from Burton (the six balls yielded 0 . 6, 6, 6, 4 , 3 ); but no one else did very much, and Herts had an easy victory. B e d f o r d s h ir e .
