H earne, the visitors had all the best o f the first d ay’ s play. H . K . F oster, and B ow ley sent up 60 in 50 m inutes to start w ith ; G . N . and B ow ley put on 63 for the fourth w icket, and B ow ley and Pearson 78 for the fifth. B ow ley has been under aiclo u d o f late, and his 73 was quite unusually restrained ; it took him 180 minutes, and on ly in clu ded three 4’s. T h e total was a m oderate o n e ; but before tim e Burns and Burrow s, bow lin g at top speed, got down five w ickets for 88. In ­ deed, 5 were down for 39 ; but at this stage W arner and M an n becam e associated and stopped the rot. On T u e s­ day W arner was soon out for an innings worth more than its mere num erical value ; but M ann stayed, p la yin g a great game. H e was out l a s t ; he had th en scored 1 3 5 — h is first first-class century— in 160 m inutes ; he never gave an actual chance, and he hit two 6’s, a 5, an d eighteen 4’s. M oreover he showed rare judgem ent, and it was largely due to this that M urrell and M ign on stayed long enough to help him to add 53 for the eighth and 68 for the tenth w icket respectively. But he cou ld not quite m anage to give his side the lead, and, as events turned out, it would have m a tte r e d nothing if he had. W orcestershire had
