L eveson -G ow er cap tain ed , though distin ctly of the scratch order, som e o f the men n ev tr h aving played together before, was a pow erful one, and Y o rk sh ire, were at full strength. L eveson -G ow er won the toss, and sent the h om e side in on a so ft wet w icket. I f the sun had sh on e th e m ove w ould p ro bably have paid ; but th e day stayed clo u d y and the p itch easy. W ilson actu ally hit up 55 in 20 m inutes, which must have m ade folks sta re ; but the feature o f the day was the partnership o f D enton and K iln er, w ho added 130 for the th ird w icket in 80 m inutes. K iln e r was m issed once, D enton tw ice ; the latter batted 2^ hours w ith two 6’s and fifteen 4 ’s, the form er nearly 2 hours, w ith tw elve 4’s. W ith th e end o f the innings the day’s p lay cam e to a close. O n F rid ay, ow ing to rain, on ly a few m inutes’ crick et was possible, and on Saturday the p itch go t n asty under strong sunshine, and the En glan d X I. had to struggle hard to a vo id defeat. K in g batted well in their first in n in g s ; in the second C e cil W ood, who was in 150 m inutes for his 75, and A u b rey F au lkn er m ade a stand, and R a p h a el saved his side from defeat at the finish.
