Warner was well enough to play, and the N ottingham crowd hailed with jo y the return o f A . O. Jones to the cap ta in cy after his long absen ce. T arran t and young H earne added 106 for the secon d w icket o f M idd lesex in 85 m inutes, and Mann (one 6, and eight 4’s) hit finely ; but the rest were disappoin tin g. T arran t (eleven 4 ’s) batted 3^ hours for his 84. G eo rge G unn and Lee put up 67 for the first wicket o f N otts, and the total was 96 for 1 at the draw ing of stumps. O n T u e sd a y the brothers Gunn added 96 in 90 m inutes, Jo h n G un n and Payton 61 in 55, John Gunn and Irem on ger 107 in 85, and Ireinonger and O ates 60 for the ninth in 30. G eo rge G an n was in 190 m inutes, gave a ch an ce at 23, and on ly hit four 4’s ; John who gave chances at 61 and 78, 250 m inutes, with a 5 (4 overthrow) and thirteen 4 ’s ; and Iremonger only 140 m inutes, with twelve 4’s, Irem onger gave no chance, and has not batted better for years. J . W . H earn e took his hundredth w icket of the season when he had Jones caught. W ass was absent, hurt, and the innin gs closed for 480. T arran t did not bowl a ball during its co-irse. M iddlesex scored 11 for o before tim e. O n W ed nesday S aville soon le ft ; but then T arran t .and J. W . H earn e put up a fine partnership addin' 180 in a trifle ever 2 hours, while H endren later helped T arran t to put on 95 in 65 m inutes, and the tired bow lini was p u n ;sh ed severely by M ann, who reached his 50 in 20 m inutes, and was altogether ‘cn ly 40 m inutes m aking 71 (three 6’s and nine 4’s). T arran t batted 3 ! hours, hil twenty-one 4 !s, and gave no chance ; H earne was in about 2 hours, with tw elve 4’s, and a Hot chance o f c and b at 61 as his on ly one m istake.
