Umpires— Brown (T) and Moss. Buckinghamshire v. Berkshire. At Great Marlow. August 15 and 16. Without H. Brougham and Hawksworth, the latter injured, the visitors could scarcely be considered at full strength, whereas Bucks had probably the strongest team they have fielded this year. Nevertheless Berks had the best of the first day’s play, at the end o f which they led by 8 ruiis with their rivals’ most dangerous batsman out in the second innings. T. R. Kent, the Slough crack, had played a good innings for Bucks ; and T. P. Norris and Bailey, who should prove a very useful man, had shown up best for Berks. Hazelton bowled particularly well for the home side. On Satur day Kent again made top score for his side, and an over-liberal allowance of extras helped the total to 236. Berks wanted 217 to win. They fought hard against the good bowling of E. H. D. Sewell and Hazelton, Woodburn playing especially well, and up to the last, with Nepean and Todd together victory always seemed possible; but in the end Bucks turned the tables on them for the Reading defeat, winning by 18 runs. The feature of the first day’s play was a fine display by the veteran Bancroft. At its close, with an innings each completed, Glamorgan led by 57 runs. On Saturday the start was delayed by rain, and the soft wicket did not suit the Welsh batsmen, who had 9 wickets down for 96. A stand of 63 by Dyson Williams-and Hacker for the tenth set Wilts 217— curiously enough, the same total required by Berks at Marlow— to get. They had only two hours left, and the alternatives were lose or draw, a win being out of the question under the conditions. In an hour they had lost 5 for 40, and with ten minutes still to go had 8 out, but defeat was averted by Lapham and Overton. G lam o rg an . First Innings. N. V. H. Riches, b' Overton .. J. R.
