Cricket 1913

648 CR ICKE T : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. August 23, 1913. Berkshire v. Devonshire. At Reading, August 13 and 14. The home side had practically full strength, and the visitors included Cap tain Spring, who made a century for Army v. Navy in 1912, and has played for Somerset (N.B.- not this year !). Collins, Norris, and Belcher— the latter espec ially— batted well for Berks ; and though five men made useful scores for Devon, the side had to follow on 113 in arrears, and had lost a wicket for 8 before call of time. On Thursday, Hargrave Carroll and Shelley played up in great style, and had useful help from Fulcher and Tate, the latter the former Hants pro. But they might not have made so many but for the fact that Hawksworth was incapacitated in the course of his fourteenth over, getting a finger so badly split that he had to go to the hospital for surgical aid. Set 244 to get for victory, Berkshire made light of the task, hit ting off the runs for the loss of only 2 wickets, in very quick time. Collins, Brougham, and Bennett were all brilliant. Dr- Woodburn, who is an Australian, by the way, bowled very finely indeed for the winners, sending down over 300 balls in the match and taking 13 wickets for 196. In the two days 1055 runs were scored. B e r k s h ir e . First Innings. Capt. L. P. Collins, c Carroll, b Wreford ... ............... 45 H . Brougham, b Sturt ... ... 2 G. G. M. Dorsetshire. At Melsham, Wilts, August 13 and 14. Neither side was at full strength, Newman being incapacitated by an injury, and Dorset lacking F. A. S. Sewell, Freeman, H. W . Farrer, and G. M. Gordon, of whom all but Sewell had been down to play. Apparently they had some difficulty in making up their side ; but for all that they pulled through by 2 wickets, after a fine fight. Walby played capital plucky cricket for them in both innings, as did the captain, C. P. Goodden, and to these two and H. B. Cummins Dorset mainly owed their victory. For Wilts J. R. Tayler (who is, one believes, a brother of the F. E. Tayler who has played both for Warwickshire and Gloucestershire), D. C. Brown, R. W . Awdry, H. Taunton, Overton, and Mitchell, all did some good work. But what has become of A. M. Miller ? The side needs him. W il t s h ir e . First Innings. J. R. Though they may have had somewhat the best of the wicket, the visitors deserved no little credit for their win in the match, since Monmouth have lately beaten Glamorgan and run up nearly 500 v. Cornwall. A total of 211, for which J. C. Fallows and W . Crabtree were largely responsible, did not suggest an innings’ w in ; but the men of Gwent were quite helpless in their first innings before Smoker, and, following on, did but little better, leaving Cheshire with victory by an innings and 93 runs. In the match the ex-Hampshire lad (whom Maurice Read recom mended strongly to the authorities of his native county, though while with Hampshire he scarcely justified the recommendation) took 13 for 38.
