Cricket 1913
532 C R ICKE T : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. August 23, 1913 H. Gradidge & Sons, Cricket Notes. (By E . H. D . S e w e ll.) E. R. Wilson’s length was a topic of conversation among' cricketers last week-end. You have got to drop her pretty regularly about the same spot to bowl 148 balls at the Oval iu hard weather for only 38 runs. Of course, Surrey were not on the hit. I see the non-turner I wrote about iast week accounted for Knight. M anu facturers and Exporters of all requ isites for Cricket, Lawn T enn is, R acquets, Squash R acquets, &c< By special request, there will be no more Chirps. Notes will be sounded in future, I hope some of them in tune. Surrey were fagged out of the Yorkshire match. After having to get rid of Kent twice during the first three days of that week— the second Kent innings was an un avoidably long and tiring: affair— it was bad fortune to have to start on Yorkshire at noon on the Thursday. And Yorkshire in their most dour, and dullest, mood, too. There are limits to human endurance. Yorkshire’s 307 for 6 on the Thursday in a little over five hours and a half on a plumb wicket and hard outfield was not a great performance. There was, from all accounts, quite a lot of “ pip ” about at the Oval before it was all over. Patentees and Sole Makers of the “ IMPERIAL DRIVER’ CRICKET BATS. Have heard great reports of George Hirst’s hundred, ft was a fine thing he came off all things considered. Rhodes played a capital innings, but somehow his best is never quite the same as George’ s. But for Hayes’ double —and he has often done well against Yorkshire— Surrey would have had a bad match. At any rate, on paper, for really one can never debate in this way, since if the chief run-getter in two small totals had failed there is nothing to show that somebody else would not rise to the occasion. Just, in fact, as Hayes did after Hayward and Hobbs had been grot rid of cheaply. Made in Men’s, Small Men’s, College, 6, 5, 4, & 3 sizes. Kent probably erred in not risking' an early declaration on Friday at Taunton, but without knowledge of “ what it looked like,” it is impossible to suggest this as the correct course or not. They went in a second time 135 on, and were a heap of runs in front by 4.30 on the Friday. However, unexpected rain upsets any applecart. It was a poor reward for Dillon, after his magnificent attempt at the Oval, to go on to Taunton only to bag a brace. Such is the game. When you are feeling: fittest of all, and like knocking: the cover off several balls, some body sticks out a hand, and you watch the rest of that day’s fun from various uncomfortable seats. On another occasion you turn up feeling like nothing else in the world, get missed slip, misjudged by long-on, given in when you are out, and collect 120 runs to the annoyance of everybody but your own side. This is partly why cricket is what it is, and why we flannelled fools stick to it as long' as anyone will permit us to take the field. I had lived many unhappy days until last week, for I had never seen Captain L. P. Collins bat. He obliged with a hundred that cost Bucks the match, but gave them all infinite pleasure. I do not mind how often the Fates ordain that I shall see him bat again, either for or against. People who get all their runs with the face of the bat, and not its two edges, butt-end, and splice, are to be encouraged at any price. His was a real hundred against Bucks on a hard wicket that was not so true as some thought it. He returns to India about the New Year. Factory: Artillery Place, Woolwich, S.E. The palm for the greatest performance of the week must ?o to A. E. Newton. Five catches at the wicket in one innings. Think of it, ye bowlers of pace,, who are only too glad to see one offer per innings frozen on to.
