Further news concerning the arrangement o f fix­ tures for the M .C .C . South A frican tour has come along. Th e Western Province authorities have re­ fused definitely the guarantee asked fo r the fifth test match, and in consequence this w ill be p layed at Port Elizabeth instead o f at Cape Town, Eastern Province offering a .£400 guarantee, and promising that the S.A . Cricket Association’s share o f the profits shall not be less than £ 100 . Western Province’s reluctance to accept the responsibility is said to be based on a notion that the third test match w ill decide the rubber— in E n g ­ land’s favour. But surely this is undervaluing the possibilities o f South A frica ’s new team. There are men among them who may do b ig things, and the matting wickets w ill be in their favour. The other match at Port E lizabeth w ill be v. Cape C olony, not v. Eastern Province, the game with the latter being p layed at Grahamstown. One o f the South Western District’s matches has been trans­ ferred— from Oudtshoorn to Robertson, which is farther from Mossel Bay, the headquarters o f the S .W .D . Un ion , where the other match w ill be played. The proposed games with Ladysm ith and Potchefstroom are to be cut out, in deference to the wish o f the M .C .C . that on ly 22 matches should be played. Next week it may be possible to give some­ thing like a definite programme. Obviously neither o f the alternative schedules given last week can be regarded as definite; p robab ly the ultimate result w ill be a compromise between the two, with the alterations noted.
