5 1 6 C R ICKE T : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. August 16, 1913. hour for the second wicket, and Warner 47 in 40 minutes for the third. Hearne’s 62 in 90 minutes included seven 4’s. Middlesex were 130 for 3 on Tuesday, but next day the remaining 7 could only add 50, Booth having the fine figeres of six for 20 in the morning. Yorkshire needed 183, and Rhodes and W ilson got 94 o f them in 90 minutes. Then several wickets fell rapidly to Hearne and Polley, but Rhodes proved unshakable, and was 85* when the winning hit was made—-a splendid finish, Middlesex being beaten by three wickets. Rhodes hit six 4 ’s and was batting 3 hours. M id d l e s e x . Second Innings. First Innings. S. H . Saville, b Drake ... Tarrant, c White, b Beoth Hearne (J. W.), b Booth... P. F. Hitch was in such deadly form at the outset that in 40 minutes four men were out for 10, and only Dillon and Day could do anything. Hitch, whose pace and spin were irresistible, claimed 8 wickets. Surrey gave a very different display. Hayward left at 40, and Hayes was thrown out by Humphreys in trying a short one. Then all efforts to part Hobbs and Harrison failed, close of play coming with the score 183 for two, or 99 for the partnership, Hobbs being 107*. He left soon after the resumption on Tuesday for an absolutely faultless 115 in 160 minutes (eleven 4’s). The wicket had added 112. Knight failed, but the other Surrey men treated the bowling mercilessly. Carr could not bowl on Tuesday, having a strained hand, and an injury also caused Humphreys to be absent from the field. There were only four 4’s in Harrison’s slow and stolid 54. But Bird’s 55 in 70 minutes was full o f fine strokes, and before lunch he and Goatly took the score from 242 to 353. Later, Spring and Strudwick added 58 in twenty minutes for the eighth w ick e t! Kent needed 379 to save an innings defeat. Hardinge and Dillon made a really good start, sending up 83 for the first wicket in a bad light; but two were down for 115 at call of time. On the third morning Hubble helped his skipper to add 89 for the fourth wicket, and another stand was made by Dillon and Day. Dillon made 135 (eleven 4’s) in 5:{ hours, playing a splendid game for his side, and gave only one chance, when 70. Day also fought an up-hill fight resolutely, and showers began to make Surrey’s victory rather doubtful. But they won in the end by an innings and 40 runs. Hitch did splendid work, and was well supported by Kirk. At Winnington Park, Northwich, August 6 and 7. Lincolnshire, though not at full strength and behind on the first innings, won a game of small scoring by 5 wickets. Day hit out well for them, and T. H. Bowman (the old Denstonian), Riley, and Broughton, all bowled with success. For the losers A. C. Williamson, who had a trial for Oxford, playing his first match for the county, made a long way the highest score, and F. Fairbank and Smoker bowled well. First Innings. L. N.
