Cricket 1913

514 C R ICKE T : A WEEK LY RECORD OF THE GAME. August 16, 1913. Bedfordshire v. Hertfordshire. At Wardown, Luton, August 8 and q . The home side had Dr. A. F. Morcom and B. L. Peel for the first time this season, and the former not only made top score, but took more wickets than anyone else. But the home bowl ing wras not strong enough to trouble Herts, for whom Titchmarsh played two fine innings, while Etheridge, Golding, and Household also scored well. For the other side, besides Morcom, Newman, Holdstock, and Nicholas were prominent, and a match of 920 runs ended in a draw in favour of the visitors, who took first innings5 points. The Lancashire Friday start experiment was quite inconclusive, for Satur day’s play was greatly interfered with by rain. Derbyshire played N. M. Hughes-Hallett, the Haileyburian, who is 6ft. 4in. in height. Lancashire lacked MacLeod, and in cluded James Tyldesley, who after several trials redeemed his promise as a bowler. Hughes-Hallett went in when 4 wickets ha:d fallen for 68, and played capital cricket. Slater made his highest score for the county as yet, and in a stay of hours hit eight 4’s in his 76. Towards the close Humphries batted pluckily; but the total was a poor one. Lancashire had 22 up for one wicket before close of play, and after a delay extending till nearly 3 o’clock on Saturday took their score to 197 for 7. Nearly all the credit belonged to John Tyldesley, who had hard lines in missing his hundred. He batted 200 mimites, with only seven 4’s, the ball refusing to travel fast on the sodden outfield, and his only chance was at 85. Makepeace helped him to add 77 for the second wicket. It was largely due to Heap that they secured a first inning’s lead on Monday; and then Derbyshire fared so poorly before some splendid bowling by Dean (who took his 1,000th wicket in first-class cricket during the day) and-Huddleston (who for the first time reached 100 wickets in a season) that 7 men were out for 37. Then Cadman and Forester added 54 for the eighth wicket, scoring at a good pace, too, and later Root helped Cadman to put on 53 and to place their side beyond any danger of a defeat outright, for Lancashire had not time to get the 150 needed for victory. Leicestershire. A t Trent Bridge, August 11, 12, and 13. Rain on Monday stopped the start till 3 p.m. In the time available Notts lost only one man (G. Gunn) for 144, the not-outs being Lee (62*) and A. W . Carr (52*). The latter had a life when 24, but both hit so well that 48 came in the last 50 minutes on Monday. The next day this pair made a phenomenal stand. They flogged the bowling in all directions, and altogether, in little more than three hours, added 333. John Gunn left at 415, but Payton (56*) stayed with Lee to add nearly another 100. Gauld declared as soon as Lee completed his 200. In for just over 5 hours, he was missed thrice, but drove superbly, hitting two 6 ’s and sixteen 4’s. Carr’s splendid 169 (twenty 4’s) in about 3 hours also included a life when 2 4 ; it is his first century for Notts. In a bad light on Tuesday afternoon Leicester shire lost W ood , King, and Riley for 55. Next morning the outstanding nine wickets could only add 88 . Following on amid the showers, they fared a good deal better. Matters had gone too far, however, and Notts won a one-sided game by an innings and 126. Coe’s 79* was the outstanding feature of the follow-on. He and Riley added 76 together, and he and Astill 74.
