Cricket 1913

August 16, 1913 CR ICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME 511 M.O.C. v. Cambridgeshire. At Lord’s, August 8 and 9. The county side made a moderately good start with 126 up for 3; but the later batsmen slumped before Bates, the Warwickshire left-hander. The club’s innings was in contrast to this. Beginning badly (49 for 3), the M.C.C. batsmen then got on top of the bowling, and Collins and Miller Hallett added 118 in an hour. Each hit eight 4’s, and the latter one 5 also. The county’s second innings was an improvement on their first. Seven men made double figures, but no one reached 50, and the M.C.C. won easily by 10 wickets. C a m b r id g e s h ir e . The visitors lacked Denton, but had the assistance of the old Rugbeian, E. R. Wilson, who bowle'd as well as ever. Warwickshire played Howell, a coach at Rugby, for W. C. Hands. They batted really well. Parsons and Charlesworth first, and then Quaife and Baker made useful stands; but the best Partnership was that of Quaife and Jeeves for the eighth wicket, which added 95 in 70 minutes. Against the bowlers of his native county, Jeeves hit out in fine style, and his top score for Warwickshire thus far included one 6, one 5, and twelve 4’s. Quaife’s chief strokes were a 5 and four 4’s. Yorkshire had made 48 for 1 at close of play. On Friday, Rhodes and Haigh, the overnight not outs, increased their Partnership to 115 in about 90 minutes. Haigh hit a 7 (4 overthrow) and ten 4’s in his excellent 92. Then followed a succession of useful scores—Kilner’s 50 in 90 minutes the highest—which ultimately gave the White Rose players a first innings’ lead. At drawing of stumps, Warwickshire (3 for 58, or only 25 on, with one or two of their players unwell) looked booked for defeat. But Saturday’s play was shortened by rain, and only a few overs were bowled till after 4 o’clock. Then Foster hit out finely, making his 58* in 55 minutes, and was able to declare. There was not much object in the declaration, as Yorkshire were scarcely likely to be dismissed in 65 minutes; but a collapse seemed tust possible when Foster howled Wilson with his second ball and Haigh with his fourth. played out time. Wiltshire v. Glamorgan. At Trowbridge, August 8 and q. The first day’s play saw an innings each completed. Hacker’s fast bowling was too much for most of the Wilts batsmen; but Pinfield hit out finely, and scored thirteen 4’s in his 71. Riches and Tait sent up three figures before the first Glamorgan wicket fell, and Gibbs and Jones hit freely. In arrears of well over 200, and on a rain-affected wicket, Wilts had no chance on Saturday, and went under by an innings and 155 runs. W il t s h ir e . First Innings H. Taunton, b Hacker T. S.
