A veteran o f the gam e, D . W . Saunders, returned to ihe crick et field in T o ro n to on July 14, and was second highest scorer for T oro n to (16 3 ) v. R o sed ale (100 for 5) in a friend ly gam e. I)yce S au nd ers played for C an a d a v. U n ited States as far back as 1S 8 1, and was a m em ber of the G en tlem en o f C an a d a team w h;ch toured this country in 1887. A week later the sam e team s met in the C ity League, and drew— R o sed ale 211 for 7, declared (J. B ell 52, H . H um p h ries 39, W . F . C . Sellers 3 7 ); T o ro n to 82 for 1 (H . G . D avidson 39*). T h e h ead in g to the report in the “ S ta r ” i s : “ H eavy scorin g in S atu rd ay’s C ric k e t.” But the soon er C an a d ia n cricketers get out o f the hab it of th in king a cou p le o f hundred a big score, the sooner they w ill be able to cop e with v isitin g team s from overseas. B ell and H um phries added 82 in partnership, and T o ro n to ’s 82 were m ade in 75 m inutes— d ecen t goin g, bu t scarcely worthy o f the praise the “ S ta r ” accord s it. B ell’s a sportsm an, anyway ; he travelled from D etro it to p lay in this gam e, and deserved to m ake top score. “ H . C . S m i t h H i g h B a t o n S a t u r d a y ” reads the head in g in the “ V icto ria D a ily T im e s ” o f Ju ly 16. In the E n g lish language, H C . N o new s o f any other m atch that day. But colum n s o f b a seb all stuff! Y e t som e o f the A ustralian crick eters told a N ew Y o ik interview er th at baseb all had been unw illingly forced upon the C an ad ian public. W hich really seem s very meek ab ou t it, if this is true. B ut every C an adian paper I see increases my b elief that, th ou gh cricket m ay be and doubtless is grow ing in popularity, baseb all is the C an adian craze— as pro footer is the craze here.
