H e eschew ed “ i f ’’-strokes, offered n o ch an ce whatever, and hit sixteen 4’s. T en n yso n gave up his own w icket to save B ow ell from bein g run out, and the sacrifice was n ot in vain. E ig h t w ickets were down for 271 when N ewm an join ed H o sie. T h e y hit out well and ad ded 103 for the ninth. H o sie ’s 68 in clu ded a six and ten 4 ’s. O n T u esd ay, the H am p sh ire bow lin g, th ou gh reinforced b y M cD o n ell, proved pow erless to prevent heavy and rap id scorin g by M idd lesex. J. W . H earn e was the cen tral figure o f the in n in g s; he batted 275 m inutes w ithout a m istake, and hit a 5 and twenty-three 4’s in h is 189. Saville, who had som e lu ck, and he put on 87 runs for the second w ick et; W arn er and H earn e a d d ed 108 for the th ir d ; and H endren, lash in g out in great style, h elp ed H earn e to a d d 163 in 90 m inutes for the fourth. H end ren hit thirteen 4 ’s. A fter h e and H earn e had gone, M ann (two 6’s and eleven 4’s) and H a ig thum ped the worn-out bow ling, and added 86. O n e o f M ann ’s big drives carried clean over the p avilion. A t ttie clo se M idd lesex h ad made 548 for 8, runs having averaged 90 an hour during the day. N ext m orning the innin gs was declared. O n W ednesday, H a n ts had no h ope o f doin g m ore than save the gam e (stum ps were to b e drawn, by arrangem ent, at 5-30), and up to a late stage scarcely lo oked like doin g so.
