A correspondent of the “ Daily Mail ” has improved 011 the “ too old at forty” theory. According to him athletes are too old at thirty. He is quite sure that a cricket ‘match between Over Thirty and Under Thirty would result in a hollow victory for the juniors. Against this theory—which is mere theory—may be quoted fact. Such matches have been played, and the results showed no such superiority for the juniors. At Lord’s in 1880 they beat Over Thirty by 3 runs. C. T. Studd, Barnes, Midwinter, Morley, William Gunn, Bates. Scotton, Flowers and Pilling were among the Young Brigade ; W. G. Grace, Ephraim Lockwood, Alfred Shaw, Finder, Barlow, Oscroft, Tom Emmett and Selby were on the older side. In 1881 Over Thirty won by 79 runs. A. N. Hornby was their highest scorer, Morley—passed into the senior contingent now—their most destructive bowler. In 1882 Under Thirty won by 10 wickets. This was a game of sensations. Over Thirty, thanks to Hornby (91) and Ulyett (138) had 165 up for one wicket at luncheon on the first day ; but they v/ere all out for 267. Bates (144 not out) and Peate (48) added 121 for the last wicket of Under Thirty. The game was last played at Scarborough in 1901, if memory serves. Then the juniors won in an innings; but they owed this to the fact that the other side had to play on a ruined wicket. George Hirst made 163 not out and took 5 for 40 for them, and George was a week under 30 at that time, which is cutting it pretty line !
