Northamptonshire. At Bath. July 28, 29 and 30. H. F. Garrett, the Australian who has played so well in club cricket at Eastbourne, appeared in the home side. He was not needed on the first day, when White and Robson went through the Midland team with unexpected celerity, Somerset did somewhat better, but, apart from Bajana and Braund, who together added 58, and Garrett, there was little merit in their display. At call of time the visitors were 50 for 1. Next day Haywood hit splendidly, making as many as 102 of the 137 put on with William Denton for the second wicket. He gave only one chance, and hit a 6 and fifteen 4’s. Scoring was of the slow and sure order thereafter, John Denton and Thompson taking 95 minutes to add 80, though Seymour livened up the game by making 64 of the 100 put on for the sixth wicket with Thompson, reaching his 50 in 35 minutes and hitting two 6’s and six 4’s. Thompson batted over 4 hours without a chance for his 131. The innings was declared on Wednesday morning at the overnight total, and Somerset slumped completety. They could do nothing with Wells, and were beaten by 264 runs. N ORTIIA M PTON'S II IRK . O. M. R W . O. M. R. W. Sussex made a very poor showing on the first day, only Vine, who stayed 150 minutes for 35 and was chipped by the crowd, and Robert Relf scoring over 30. Buckenham, bowling his fastest, had four good wickets in six overs for 5 runs. Freeman had a hand split while fielding, and had to retire. Essex did even worse, and at call of time had 7 down for 90. Perrin was then 32*,and on Tuesday he was finely caught when 49. Plucky hitting by the tail put Essex ahead. Buckenham and Mead adding 51 in 25 minutes for the last wicket, Sussex lost three good wickets cheaply, but Jupp and Chaplin made a capital stand of 87 in an hour and Fender and Jupp added 60 in 30 minutes. Jupp made no mistake, and hit nine 4’s. Nobody else did anything big, and Essex, set 213, had an easy victory, Perrin and Fane clinching matters by adding 97 unparted at the finish. It is curious that Essex should thus have beaten S u s s e x this season while beating no one else thus far. First Innings. H. L. Wilson, lbw, b Douglas ...
