Leicestershire v. Derbyshire. At Ashby -de-la-Zouch, July 26, 28 and 29, before a crowd of 4,000. De Trafford, Shields, Sharp, and Astill reappeared in the home side, and Baggallay and Cole for Derbyshire. The veteran De Trafford failed for once, Bracey, who only bowled five overs, getting his and King’s wicket. But six men scored between 20 and 60, W ood and King adding 53 for the second partnership and Sharp and Shipman 54 for the seventh. Shipman hit a 6 and seven 4’s, but Riley’s dashing 60 overshadowed everything else in the creditable total of 247. His strokes included three 6 ’s (one over the railway embankment) and seven 4’s. In the field, Leicestershire started with two awful bits of bad luck—Shipman, who has been playing so finely of late, ricked his side, and Cadman was missed before he had scored. None for 57 was the Derbyshire score on Tuesday night, and next day a total of over 300 was reached. This was largely due to two men, Cadman and Slater. The former did not reach his hundred for over three hours, but he hit ten 4’s and gave no chance. Neither did Slater, whose 50* in 80 minutes included a 6 and six 4’s. Leicester, batting again, lost Wood for 36 on Monday. The game fluctuated on Tuesday. When half of the Leicester men had gone they were only 39 on, when King played a fine game for his side. Getting valuable aid from Riley (40 for the sixth wicket) and Sharp (50 for the seventh), he was batting finely for 2\ hours and had a life when 50. His 82 included eleven 4’s. After the interval, Root finished the innings by taking the last four wickets for 14. Derby shire wanted but 161, and Cadman and Oliver scored H.
