Cricket 1913

August i, 1913. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAMfe. Devonshire v. Berkshire Oil the Kelly College Ground, Tavistock, July 23 and 24. On a fast wicket Devon did very poorly at the outset, Hawkvvorth (who used to plav for the countv before he went to Bradfield) puzzling everyone. Only Hargrave Carroll, who played very patiently, and Wreford (of Neasden). who hit hard, did anything. The feature of the visitors’ innings was the brilliant play of Captain L. P. Collins, home on leave from India. A 6 and thirteen 4’s were included in his 91. Shoosmitli helped him to add 89 for the second wicket. At call of time Berks were 102 on with 3 wickets to fall. Next day Hawksworth hit out well, and the innings did not close till 338 had been registered. In spite of having the Rev. W . H. ArundelU one of their best bats, incapacitated by a blow on the knee, Devon played up well, Carroll, Knight, and Cruwys all making scores in the neighbourhood of 60. Berks were set only 77 for victory; but WTreford and Light bowled finely on a v/icket incline to crumble, and Devonshire pulled off a sensational victory by a single run. D ev o n sh ir e . Berkshire. At Penzance, July 25 and 26. Berks again lacked Bennett, and Cornwall were without Trevarthen. Some effective bowling by Whiting resulted in the cheap dismissal of the visitors, and. thanks mainly to Vibart, Tresawna and Escott, Cornwall gained the good lead of 118 on the first innings. This proved enough to obviate the necessity of their batting again, for on Saturday, with Whiting once more in great form, Berks were all out for 115, only the captain, Sir Charles Nepean, and Bailey, a new man to the side, doing anything. These two added 64 for the seventh wicket. Hawksworth, who is a googly bowler, did fine work for the losers, it will be seen. Cornwall won byan innings and 3 runs. Monmouthshire. At Boughton Hall, Chester, July 21 and 22 Cheshire had a really good win in this match, a result due to a capital stand late in their first innings by two men hitherto little known to fame—though Hales has played for the county a few times before—and to fine bowling by Smoker and Barrell. Silverlock’s all-round play was the redeeming feature of a disappointing show by the losers. Cheshire won by 10 wickets. M o n m o u th sh ire . First Innings. A.M. Mahby, st.
