Cricket 1913

456 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u ly 26, 1013. stood at the head of Division A in 1912, Pt. St. Charles, with 16 wins, 2 losses, topped Division B. The best batting figures were J. Horsfall’s for McGill—-179 runs at just under 30 per innings. T. Wilson, of Lachine, captured most wickets—28 at 5'21 each. On June 3 rd Lieut. H. R. N. Cobbett scored 105 * for Royal Canadian Garrison Artillery, Company 2 v. Royal Canadian Regiment, in the Halifax (N.S.) Garri son Cricket League. This is the same batsman who in 1906 made three consecutive centuries in British Columbia—a North American record. On June 1 2 th Gunner Dunstan made 112 (ref.) for Garrison v. Fen wick at Halifax. In the Winnipeg League matches of July 5 the Wanderers, after succumbing to C.P.R. for 53 (E. C. Laver 25 ), put out their opponents for the paltry total of 16 , W . L. Price taking 7 for q, and Law 3 for 7 . Winnipeg A. ( i i t for 4 — S. F. Trotter 3 5 , J. G. Mackin tosh 29 , V. G. Williams 26 *) beat St. jude’s ( 93 —A. B. S. Brown and R. Brewer 21 each). Civics (144 for 8 , dec.) and Young Conservatives (146 for 6 ) drew a game said to have been completely spoiled by “ outrageous umpiring.” CEYLON. There is plenty of cricket in Colombo, and a fair amount in Kandv ; but one does not often get particulars of a match at Tiincomalee. The officers of H.M.S. “ Swiftsure ” met the local club there in the middle of June. Trincomalee declared at 142 for 8 (Dr. S. P. Joseph 43). The naval men brought off a surprise. Lieut. Keat drove in fine style, and scored 89, and they won the match with 6 wickets in hand. W T. Greswell had 6 for 19 for Colombo C.C. v. Colts C.C. on June 21st. The scores were low : Colts 65 and 80 for 4 (W. De Rozayn 36), Colombo 138 for 8 , dec., (J. C. Johnson 36). Greswell had up to that date taken 50 wickets for 419 since New Year’s Day. T. Kelaart, the veteran bowler, had 6 of the 8 Colombo wickets for only 48 runs. F. J. Siedle maintains his fine bowling form. Up to the end of June he had 75 wickets to his credit. Six for 49 (Sports Club v. Sinhalese) was his latest analysis. R. Aiyadurai, to whom reference was made a week or two ago, had 6 for 22, on June 28th, for Tamil Union v. Police. Centuries have been few in Ceylon lately ; but A. T. Pollocks (80* for Colts v. Sinhalese in a match to be continued the next week) seemed well on the way to three figures. CHINA. The season in Shanghai has lately begun; and a cutting which has reached me via New York deals with prospects. Captain E. I. M. Barrett is back, and both he and Livy Walker will be playing for the Shanghai C.C., of which the Surrey man is captain. Another good man returned after a longer absence is Dr. O. D. Rasmussen, who was last year at Los Angeles. He will play for the Shanghai Recreation C.C. The Shanghai club is said to have an ex-Kent county player in W . H. Moule; but one fails to remem ber him as playing for Kent. The third important club of the great port is the B .A .T .; but what B.A.T. may stand for is “ wropt in mistry ” as far as I am con cerned.
