Knight, 1-4-0-10-0; E. W. C. Wace, 1-1-0-17-0. Gore Court beat St. Law rence, at Sittingbourne. Murrin (38) and E. D. Fanshaw e (28) werechief contribu tors to the visitors’ moderate total of 131.L. S. W atson ’s 82* was the main factor in the home side’s success, and C. F . W ood (25*) gave him good help in a stand a fter the fifth w icket had fallen . T otals : 131 and 137 for 5. In the Lancashire Leagu e, Harrison, the Durham County man, put up a fine all-round perform ance— 74 and 8 for 56— for Lowerhouse v. R aw tenstall. W illiam Cook was eq u ally successful— 7 for 36 and 85 in 65 m inutes— for Burnley v. B acup, Kerm ode takin g 7 for 42 for Bacup. Hartington had 6 for 38 (Enfield v. H aslin gd en ); F. Brown, 5 for 8, in clu din g the hat trick (Colne v. N elson ); Gar- ritty, 6 for 17, and N orbury, 4 for 18 (East Lancashire v. Church); and W ilso n 6 for 8i (Todmorden v. Rams- bottom ); so that, on the whole, bow lers had the best of the argument. H igson (7 for 37, M iddleton v. Rochdale), T . Simpson (6 for 38, R ochdale v. M iddleton), F. B arker (6 fo r 52, Stalybridge v. Heywood), and E. Bowden (7 for 35, Little- borough v. M ilnrow ) were among the chief perform ers with the ball in C entral Lan cashire L eagu e games. Quite the best score of the day was G. R ad cliffe’s 97 for Stalybridge. In Y o rksh ire C oun cil gam es the equilibrium was w ell m aintained, good perform ances by both bow lers and bats men being accomplished. One notes Oyston’s 8 for 69 (Leeds v. M orley), J. S. A u ty’s 8 for 69 (B irstall v. B atley), G. A. B u ck ley ’s 8 for 41 (Sheffield United v. Ossett), J. Moore’s 6 for 35 (Dew sbury and S av ile v. Chickenley), and S. Sm ith’s 5 for 10 (Featherstone v. E lland). T h e last- named, w ith 91 (sixteen 4’s) was also to the fore in the batting lin e, another of the Sm ith clan , Joseph Sm ith, making 98 (seventeen 4’s) for B irstall, and C la rk 83 for Morley in a total of 159. T h e bow lers had not a il the best of it in B irm ingham League gam es, for, though grounds were w et, they were not really difficult. Simm s (5 for 52) and W . G. Gethin (4 for 42) were the main factors in K idderm inster’s rather unexpected defeat of M itchell and B u tler’s at hom e; for the brewery club, A. Brown had 5 for 50. F o r A ston U n ity v. Dudley, H. L. Simms had 6 for 42. T he U n ity made tgg (B. N . D avies 67), and won by 103 runs. G rim shaw , for Dudley, took 5 for 51. Handsworth W ood beat Stourbridge by one w icket, a fter a tough tussle. No one reached 40 in the gam e, though the totals were 160 and 165 for 9. W a l sall (224 for 8— L. F . T a y lo r 47) smashed up Sm ethw ick ( 79 ), B ramm er takin g 4 for 10, G. H aw ley 4 for 24. W est Bromwich D artmouth came out of their sh ell, and ran up 247 for 9 (W . B. Corfield 72) v. M oseley, who avoided de feat (141 for 9 at the end) m ainly through the steadiness of F. B. Goodison, G. H allam , and G. H. T yler. On W ednesday in last week, Ton bridge at home adm inistered a heavy defeat to St. Law rence, scoring 229 for 8, dec. (J. H. K elsey 60, G. L. Herm an 43, J. H. Reynolds 36, E . D ann 25 not out, S. L. Sassoon 21) to 89 (D utnall 31). Freem an, the K en t colt (5 for 44) and H. S. V ere Hodge (4 for 18) bow led w ell fo r the winners. St. Law rence A on Thursday beat Simon Lar.gton School— 141 for 6 (J. Murrin 65, L. C reery 41) to 75 (V. T om alin 22). Hampstead (199— R. C. B rown 94, W . R. Mann 41, D. G raham 36) beat F in ch ley (128— S. H. S a v ille 70, L. Neiderbeitmann 21) on W ednesday at Hampstead. T h e home side looked lik e m aking a big sco re ; but there was a collapse after the fa ll o f the third w icket. Rain spoiled the match between Sussex M artlets and Mr. P. H. Pap illon's X L at H ove on the 14th and 15th. T h e M artlets made 159— E . C. Colem an 43, S. H. Curtis 30; but the other side’s innings had barely begun when the watery element applied the closure. On Wednesday in last week Sussex M artlets suffered a defeat of no uncertain kind at the hands of Brook House, A rdingley. T h e Martlets were all out for 87, towards which the veteran A. F. Somerset contributed 34. Brook House hit up 236 for 2 (II. B. L. Jones 103*, P. C artw right 89). F or them , G. A. Fairbairn had 7 for 24. W. Freem antle, of E a lin g D ean, made more than half the runs for Mr. G ardner’ s X L v. Stanmore on T hu rsd ay, his 66 (in a total of 124) in clu din g a 6, a 5, and nine 4’s. F or Stanmore (200 for 8), A. L. G orringe batted splen didly. Twenty-one 4’ s were included in his 135*. Llew ellyn, whose dropping out of county cricket is really deplorable, set up a new record for the Lan cashire L eagu e on July 16. He scored 188* for A ccrin gton v. B acup, with only two chances— at 49 and at 154. L ast season his total for the club was 581, average 26.40, h igh est score 100, and he took 112 w ickets at 9.20 each. In 1911, when runs were easier to m ake, he totalled 768, averaged 48, and had a h igh est of 135*. H is 85 w ickets cost under 13 each. L. & N.VV.R. were at Harpenden, who (even in the absence of C. T . T itchm arsh) are by no means an easy side to beat. B ut they were beaten by 62 runs— 135 to 73— and one man was almost entirely responsible. It is true that A. R. G ate (32) and H. J. Paris (19) gave the railw ay men a good start; but P. G. Skilton made more than either (45), and when the home side went in he bowled in such deadly form that all ten w ickets— and nine of them clean bow led !— fell to him at a cost of only 32. W.. H. M arsh (7 for 48) had bowled really well for Harpenden; but he was quite put in the shade. It was a gracefu l act on his part to present Skilton with the ball at the finish, and one that the L. & N .W .R . men appreciated. Saturday was a bad day for G reville. T h eir first team met A lexandra P ark , who were easily beaten in May. But | G reville turned up four short; and paid a heavy penalty. I T h e y were all out for the absurd total of 26. T h eir oppo nents ran up 143— H. Hale 42, T . R. R obins 35. T h e only brigh t spot for G reville was the bow ling of their captain, Gordon Jannings, who took 6 for 34. T h e A team met T h e Square on their charm in g ground at Pinner. L a ck in g three of their team , all good bats, they fared badly. T h e Square made 149. B. L a n g le y ’s trem endously hard hit 48 included two 6’s and six 4’ s; A. Abel, one of the “ G u v’nor’ s ” numerous progeny, played w ell for 26. A. M. Dunn took 5 for 60. None of the Gre- I ville men could do anythin g with L a n gley, a bowler of real j class. T h e y were all (7 w ickets) out for 23, and, fo l low in g on, made 81— A. M. Dunn 22. T h e B team were in even worse straits. T h eir opponents did not turn up at all. Or— was it all for the best? N ever m ind! Bette* I lu ck this week, G re v ille !
