Cricket 1913
E :« 8 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u l y 19, 1913. Derbyshire v. Sussex. At Derby, July io, n , and 12. W inning the toss on an easy if slow pitch, after a drizzle had delayed the start till lunch, Sussex insured themselves against defeat by run ning up 240 for the loss of Wilson and Robert Relf. Vine and Wilson, after a slow start, scored 122 in exactly that number of minutes. Wilson again showed what a fine batsman he is, giv in g difficult chances when 35 and 45, but hitting ten 4 ’s. R. Relf added another to his many good innings this season, scoring five 4’s in his dashing 60. He and Vine put on 104 in eighty-five minutes for the second wicket. Vine, who w as 83* on Thursday night, easily passed his century. If not altogether exhilarating, his stay of nearly six hours was invaluable. Giving only one chance, he scored thirteen 4 ’s. But so modest was the support accorded that the effort closed for 322, Morton in combination with Beet at the wicket (deputising for Hum phries, ill) bowling very finely. Beet and Morton, strangely enough, hit up 59 apiece when Derbyshire went in, it being the former’s first first-class half-century. He had five 4’s and Morton six, and thanks to them and Oliver (whose chanceless 73 in two hours and three-quarters included a six and seven 4’s) the home team paused on Friday at 243 for 6. After this a draw was always inevitable, Sussex having to be satisfied w ith points for a first innings’ lead. They declared at 144 for 8, Cox unfortunately knocking his wicket down when by bright play he had scored 24. The Peakites had go t nearly 100 of the 182 wanted to win when time was called, for only three men. But they were almost wholly indebted to O liver’s splendid 6t*, and it will be seen that he made 134 in the match for once out. First Innings. H. L. Wilson, c Slater, b Cadman ... Yorkshire were minus Sir A. White and Drake (injured). This extra match be tween the Red and White Roses was limited to about 35 hours on Thursday. In that period the Tykes completed an innings for 177. Such a moderate display w as due to the Lancastrians’ smart bowling and fielding, though the analysis is something of a curiosity. It will be seen that Heap and Huddleston, while having more than 100 hit from them, could only take one wicket between them, whereas Dean (who, oddly enough, had left the ground believing that no play could take place before lunch) came out with the splendid record of 9 for 62. Yorkshire would have fared still worse but for Rhodes. Wilfred w as eighth out at 121, having batted 2 hours 50 minutes for his 58. Such restraint did he exhibit that he hit but three 4’s, and in his last fifty-five minutes only made 8. There were three valuable little stands— 34 by Rhodes and Wilson for the first w icket, 32 by Rhodes and Booth for the fourth, and 36 by Dolphin and Birtles for the ninth. The latter’s 27* was of peculiar value to his side. On Friday Lancashire fared still more disastrously against Rhodes and Kilner. Makepeace, who scored four 4’s, played superbly for his 48 out of 87 from the bat. He went in first and left last. Yet more sensation followed when the Yorkshiremen went in again. In ninety minutes they were put out for 73, losing their first three men for 8. Though receiving some help from the pitch, Dean must be complimented on a feat seldom equalled in big cricket. It will be noticed that Birtles, with 27* and 14*, was twice undefeated. Wanting 159 for victory, Lancashire lost Makepeace and the three Tyldesleys for 71. On Saturday, however, a nice little partnership of 57 by Hornby and MacLeod brought victory in sight. When the captain left only 18 were wanted, and as these were got for the loss o f Heap, the Lancastrians won by three wickets. Roberts bowled one wide in first innings. Umpires : Harrison and Street. Kent II. v. Surrey II. At Tonbridge, July 11 and 12. A match of low scoring, with only one special feature— the fine bowling of Preston in Surrey’s first innings. No one could do anything with him, and of his nine wickets— for only 15 runs— seven were bowled down and one l.b.w. Kent II. won by an innings and 3 runs. First Innings. Wilson (B.
