T a rilto n is still a young man. He w as born on F eb ­ ru a ry 8, 1885, in th e w indw ard parish of S t. John ’s, B arb ado s; and he w a s edu cated at the L od ge School, where, in earlier years, m an y another famous W est Indian cricketer — one m a y m en tion the C larkes, th e P ackers, the Skeetes, and th e Goodmans — h ad learn ed the rudim ents. H e go t his place in the school’s eleven at th e early age of tw e lv e, and showed considerable prom ise even then, th o u gh n a tu ra lly not perform ing great deeds. F o r a tim e cricket at th e school was in a b ad w a y, and this p rob ab ly accoun ts fo r his not com ing on as exp ected . B u t th e ad ven t of a new head ­ m aster m ade a big change ; and in 1901-2 and 1902-3 T arilton d id good w ork, cap­ taining th e team one year, Mr. p. H. Cole, and others h a v e lent lu stre— bu t still fo r a tim e he hung b ack. In his second season w ith th e club , how ever, he was second to P e rc y G ood ­ m an in the b a ttin g averages, w ith 37.50 p er innings, and in the follow ing one (1905-6) he a veraged 24.07, and also kep t w icket v e r y well, h a vin g now q u ite giv en up bow ling. It w as in this season th a t he first represented th e island. B arb ado s sen t a representa­ tiv e team to P ort of Spain, and won b o th m atch es o f th e tou rn am en t, b ea tin g B ritish G u iana b y 61 runs and T rin i­ dad b y 16 runs. T a rilto n ’s scores were on ly 2, 4, 3 and 4, so th a t he could not claim a n y great share in the triumphs. B u t his d a y w as to come. T h e season o f 1906-7 w as not one o f his best ; b u t in 1907-8 he cam e to th e front in v e r y decided fashion ; he scored a couple o f cen tu ries for his club, and a veraged 43.40 per innings ; and w hen a
