Cricket 1913
3)4 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME J u l y 12, 1913. Buckenham got his 88 in as many minutes, hitting a 5 and eleven 4 ’s, and Louden hit a 6 and ten 4 ’s. Albert Relf and Holloway bowled well, the latter’s six for 104 being better than it looks on paper. Essex established a strong lead by the end of Thursday’s play, getting half the opposing side out for 79. The effort closed for 163, of which A. Relf and Chaplin subscribed 36 each. It was unlucky that a strained arm prevented Holloway from bowling in the home side’s second jnnings. The weakened attack was terribly punished by Freeman, Perrin, and Fane. The former, with 121*, scored 183 in the match, which was a triumph for him. Declaring at once on Saturday, Douglas gave Sussex 438 to ge t on a rain-damaged pitch. Slow batting by Vine and A. Relf brought the score to 102 for one wicket, but after the interval men were dismissed rapidly, and Essex registered this their first victory of the season by 131. So respectable a total as 306 by the losers was largely due to Vincett and A. Relf. The latter was batting two hours and forty minutes for his 78, anu w as especially severe on the loose ones. The catch with which Mead c. and b. Fender was quite sensational. very well in getting six for 114. Northants on Thursday evening replied by losing W . Denton, Haywood, and Woolley for 76. Next day turned out so wet that scarcely any play was possible, foreshadowing the inevitable draw. On Satur day the game was abandoned, decidedly against the mid landers, for whom the best batting was J. Denton’s 40* (first innings) and W . Denton’s 45 (second). Helped by the pitch, Whitehead bowled finely, his first innings’ figures being 71 for 7 and his match analysis 11 for 110. E s s e x . First Innings. J. W. H. T. Douglas, c Relf (R. R.), b Relf (A. Umpires : Atfield and White. Lancashire v. Northamptonshire. At Manchester, July 3, 4, and 5. For the benefit of A. Paul, for so long a valued member of the county eleven. He was unfortunate in the weather. The visitors still lacked East and Wells, and played Murdin vice Thorpe. Lancashire were still minus I)ean, and brought in James Tyldesley (for Cook) and Boddington. Seeing that four of their best men went for 113, the homesters did well to run up nearly 300. But they owed this to the vigorous cricket of John Sharp, who (with a man to run for him) scored his highest of the season, 123*, in three hours, and hit sixteen 4’s. Considering how much he was used, Thompson did BLANCO For Cleaning and Whitening White Buckskin and Canvas Shoes, Cricket Pads, and all other articles of a similar nature.
