Cricket 1913
J uly 5, 1913. • CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 379 heavily to Tynemouth (87 to 155), R. Myers (52) and J. B. Duncan (7 for 22) doing fine work for the winners. In the North-West Durham League the Medomsley v. Gates head Fell game was only decided with what would have been in any case the last ball of the match. Medomsley lost 5 wickets pretty cheaply ; but then a good stand by Hardisty (90*) and H. Dixon (70*) enabled them to declare at 230 for 6, and Gates head Fell were dismissed for 129. For Consett v. Swalwell Buckett took 6 for 16. Swalwell only totalled 51. S. Dickinson scored 92 for Birtley v. Langley Park ; but his side did not win. Langley Park’s highest scorer, J. Ardley, made only 47 ; but there were eight double figures, whereas the support given Dickinson was very poor indeed. Llanelly easily defeated Neath. Scoring was not high on either side ; but W. Davies’s 43 and Hugh Howell’s 36* for Llanelly together more than equalled all Neath’s runs from the bat. The respective totals were 150 and 83. Hacker and Bestwick bowled well for Neath, and Vogler (6 for 36) and E. Gee (3 for 19) for Llanelly. Newport had an easy win over Clifton— 238 to 114. Silver- lock’s 108 and 7 for 56 made a big share of the work done for Newport. Swansea played Plymouth Merthyr for Creber’s benefit, winning by 177 to 164— a good tussle. There was a fine attendance. Percy Morris made 96 for Swansea ; K. Harris (49) was top scorer for the Merthyr side. Cardiff defeated Barry by 103 runs, J. R. Tait (86) and the bowling of W. W. Odell and E. A. Chandless being the main factors in the victory. H. H. Sweet-Escott scored 66 for Penarth, who declared at 200 for 8, but could not beat Lewis Merthyr (144 for 3— Hughes 65*). Abergavenny (179— C. H. B. Marsham, 37, top scorer) and Usk (101 for 5— F. Rees 47) also drew. As usual, there was some pretty big scoring in Dublin. Lein ster and Phoenix, strong batting sides both, met on Friday and Saturday, but did not find two days long enough. Leinster made 272— J. Anderson 67, W. H. Lambert 44, W. P. Hinton 40. Phoenix replied with 349. On Friday night J. W. F. Crawfurd was 103* ; on Saturday he carried his score to 201. He made his runs in 125 minutes, gave no chance, and hit five 6’s and twenty-four 4’s. A good bat in his Oxford days, Craw furd is probably a very much better one now. The Rev. R. M. Gwynn (56) helped him to add 171 for the fourth wicket. After that W. Harrington, whose one wicket thus far had cost 88, took 5 of the last 6 for 25, the innings closing for 349. G. W. F. Kelly, another Oxonian, had 6 for 47 when Leinster batted again ; but with 159 for 8 (P. M. D avey 41*, W. P. Hinton 34*) they saved the game, though 8 had been down for 94 when Davey and Hinton came together. P. F. Quinlan made 122 for Dublin University v. Curragh District. Another drawn game. Among the scores for the Cur ragh in one innings or the other being 70 by R. L. Palmer, 57 and 41 by Capt. Nisbet, 52* by Capt. Trueman, and 49 by E. B. Maxwell. For Pembroke (228) v. Co. W icklow (61) M. Martin took 8 for 25. Civil Service, leading 5th Lancers on the first innings by 19 runs only, actually won in an innings, getting their opponents out for 14 in their second. Murphy (6 for 5) and Binnie (4 for 6) did the damage. A. L. Gregg scored 71 for North of Ireland v. Ulster in the Ulster Challenge Cup. The game was left unfinished, to be concluded on Tuesday. H. E. Wood made 73 for Cliftonville v. Queen’s University— also held over for completion, till Monday evening. Waringstown (76) beat Holywood (35), T. McKenzie taking 7 for 18 ; and the Holywood side included W. Pollock, probably Ulster’s best batsman; North Down (G. J. Bruce, 66 J. Dearden 60) declared at 220 for 8 v. Banbridge— match to be continued on Thursday. -------- ----------- Cricket Articles Elsewhere. T h e M o d e r n F ir s t - C la s s C r i c k e t e r , b y C. B .
