At the Oval', June 30, July 1 and 2. Surrey enjoyed a splendid day’s batting after an unpropitious start, for before lunch Hayward, Hobbs, Hayes, and Bird left for 64 runs, Holloway bowling exceedingly well. After this it was cer tainly remarkable for half the side to total over 400. The hero of the occasion was Sandham, who is only twenty-three vears old, and whose first century in first-class cricket this is. It w as marked by great unselfishness, too, for towards the close of Monday’s play he endeavoured to let Harrison get most of the bowling so that the latter might also score a century. This, however, was not accomplished on Monday, when Sandham ’s score w as 175* and Harrison’s 98*, and they had already added 257. Goatly’s 63 included an on- drive for 6, all run. Everyone of the Sussex team save Street had a turn with the ball. On Tuesday Surrey declared at 501 for 9, Sandham getting within four of his 200 and Harrison scoring 138*. The younger professional’s display was quite without fault, and he w as in just over five hours. Their partnership realised 298. Harrison carried carefulness to excess, batting 4 hours 35 minutes for his score. Sandham hit a 5 and twenty-four 4’s, Harrison a 5 and eleven 4 ’s. It was remarkable that of the only two Sussex bowlers who took wickets, Albert R elf’s five cost only 91 and Holloway’s four 79. Such a poor resistance was offered by the Sussex batsmen to the fast bowling of Hitch and Rushby that this pair were unchanged, only Fender getting 20 runs. They followed on 414 behind, and but for a stand by Albert Relf and Chaplin would have fared little better. On Wednesday Relf increased his figures to 103 by patient and judicious cricket, and while Vine partnered him something like a stand was made. After lunch, however, Hitch and Spring reasserted their supremacy, the former’s five for 61 and the latter’s three for 19 being too much for poor Sussex. Surrey won by an innings and 158. The Welsh county gained a big advantage on the first day, when Maxwell (ex- Somerset) hit up 113 in about a couple of hours, two 6 ’s, one twelve 4’s included. Dyson Williams helped him to add 91 for the seventh w icket.' Most of the Kent batsmen failecj before the fast bowling of Hacker and Maxwell, and at call of time the home side, having followed on, were still 57 in arrear with 7 wickets to fall. Except for Troughton— highest scorer in each innings— no one made much of a stand on Tuesday, and Glamorgan won by 9 wickets. G lam organ sh ire . First Innings.
