T h e Interprovincial Tournament to be held under the auspices o f the Western C anada Cricket Association at W innipeg will take place August 4 to 9 inclusive. How to M ake a C e n tu ry ,* by J. B. Hobbs.—Who knows better? It’s easy to make a century if you are John Berry Hobbs, and it’s distinctly worth- while to be told by that enterprising and sporting batsmen how to do it. If you can only do it a la J. B. Hobbs you will be certain of popularity. The fame of the Surrey crack is of such a sort as any man might be proud of;, not only does he make no end of runs, but he makes them like a man, with the interests of his side at heart, and self put into the back ground. A great batsman and a great cricketer; the terms are not necessarily synonymous. An excellent portrait of him form9 the frontispiece of the book, and! there are eleven other action photographs. This is no mere didactic treatise. Hobbs .takes “ our man ” through the process of scoring his hundred in so entertaining a fashion that the book reads like a story by a skilled hand. Yet the instruction that he ! sets out to impart is all there; the why and wherefore of things find explanation. 1 shall never make a century— except in dreams; but after reading this book I think it is likely enough that I' may go to bed! and dream over again an old dream-—that of playing as an emergency man for England v. Australia, and making a good score, and getting a place in the other matches, and finishing up with a glorious century. One dreams, and awakens to the cold reality of day ; but to such as John Hobbs is given the coming true of dreams—or maybe to achieve without first dreaming of achievement! * How to M ake a C e n tu ry , by J.
