Cricket 1913
June 28, 1913. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 353 for his last eight balls got him five wickets— four clean bowled— without a run ! Though not wanting many runs Burslem had a stiff fight ere they could claim victory, losing six wickets— two run out— before the winning notch was recorded, and it needed all the resource of Mills (34) to pull the side through. E. J. Johnson bowled magnificently in trying to atone for Stone's poor batting display, and had seven wickets for five runs each. There will be sorrow in the Potteries if the rumour that Barnes means returning to the Lancashire League should prove true. But one doubts his going to Nelson. He has made many friends in his present home, and has been very happy there, I am told. Our Lincolnshire correspondent writes: Most of the local clubs on Saturday were in great scoring form, and those critical people who are always looking for a big harvest of runs (and every time they don’t get it wanting to know “ what is wrong with cricket ? ” ) should have been well satisfied. Thus at Lincoln the aggregate of runs was 381, at Grantham 328, and there were other evidences of dashing work with the bat in the short time at disposal. ----------- The match at Lincoln saw the Grimsby Rovers in particularly good form. E. Hallam (of the county team) with 46, S. Seymour (45), W. Dutnall (43), and C. Williamson (38) were the leading contributors to the 258 runs made for the loss of 9 wickets, at which point “ Hold ! Enough ! ” was cried. Every man who batted contributed something. Against this capital total Lincoln started fairly well; but though E. Pullein made a good effort (40), and H. W. Barnes and F. G. Baker contributed useful scores the innings closed for 123, Grimsby Rovers thus winning by 135 runs. Hallam took four wickets at low cost. The Lindum A team had a fine time against Lincoln St. Andrews scoring 197 of 6 wickets (J. R. Brailsford 48, C. T. Jessop 43*, C. D. Henderson 30*) and dismissing their opponents for 70 runs, Greeves and Bavin bowled most effectively. Grantham was opposed to an eleven from London got to gether by Mr. W. H. Harrison. The game served to demon strate Grantham’s strength— or the visitors’ weakness— for the home team made 280 runs for 6, dec., while the Londoners wound up their innings with a total of only 48. Grantham’s 280 were made in less than 2J hours, one player, Whitsed, making 41 in something like a quarter of an hour ! M. Broughton for the second week in succession made over 50 ; Rooksby scored 53, Shaw 43, the Rev. Goldsmith 38. Appleby and Beadsmoore bowled finely, the former taking 7 wickets very cheaply.
