Rain prevented more than five minutes’ plav on the second day, and the match had no result. Percy B'riggs’s capital 72 and Morgan’s bowling were its chief features. Hats off to the “ grand old m an” of Scottish cricket! Peebles County scored 251 for 9 wickets and^ applied the closure, leaving the Grange two hours and a-quarter to bat. L. M. Balfour-Melville then took his stand at the crease, and, playing magnificent cricket, carried his side to within a run or two ot victory before he was caught at mid-on. His score was 140, obtained in a couple of hours, and among his hits were eighteen 4’s and ten 3’s, while his only chance was a difficult one on the ropes just before he was out. The Grange had totalled 262 for 8 wickets at the call of time. For Peebles County W. Thorburn (79) and W. Eddie (101) had a fine partnership. Another veteran to distinguish himself on Saturday was C. T. Mannes, of Drumpellier. East Stirlingshire had scored 109; Drumpellier required 8 to win when last over was called. A. G. Waddell hit a 4, a 2, and a single, and Mannes was left to take the last ball. He sent it clean over the ropes amid a scene of tremendous enthusiasm. His full score was 62*. Before the usual large crowd— ten thousand or there abouts— Perthshire and Forfarshire met on the North Inch, Perth, in the first of their annual tussles, and the latter won an exciting match by 34 runs. ^'165 was taken at the gate, while Benskin reaped £ 7 0 from the collection for his “ benefit.” Perthshire were all out for 161, a very small score in the circumstances, with J. Anderson (31) top scorer. Forfar shire lost eight wickets for 144, but Wynyard came in and took fifteen from an over by W. L. Fraser, and the match was won. G. B. Gilroy (32), G. K. Chalmers (20), G. M. Cleghorn (49), and Wynyard (17) hit splendidly when matters were looking black for their side. A. Broadbent was the outstanding figure in the other county fixture, between Stirling County (81) and Aberdeen shire (98 for 7 wickets). He captured six Stirling wickets for 13, including the “ hat trick,” and was highest scorer in the match with 35. Earlier in the week Uddingston (61) came a terrible cropper against Forfarshire (272 for 6 wickets). Wynyard had 7 wickets for 18, and R. G. Tait (55) and T. Macleod (78) put the issue out of doubt in half an hour. A. C. Cullen (Uddingston) appears to have profited by the tour in the South. He scored in * against Clack mannan County. J. Kerr, too, put up 98 for Greenock against Carlton. A match of particular interest was that between Grange and Ayr at Dam Park, Ayr. The latter had won in Edin burgh last season, and on paper it did not appear to be a very strong eleven that the Grange were sending to avenge that defeat; but they emerged with credit from a drawn game. Ayr rattled up 271 for 5 wickets, and the Grange replied with 195 for 4. J. T. Parker (101) and A. Money (70) for Ayr, and R. H. L. Whitelaw (60) for Grange got most runs; but nearly all the batsmen scored freely. A. E. Lawton, Derbyshire and Lancashire, was assisting Ayr for the day. He scored 25, and had the four wickets which fell for 50. In their away match against West of Scotland Ayr had the services of Platt of Surrey. He was not seen to advan tage— scoring 4 and his two wickets costing 66. The game was drawn.
