Cricket 1913

344 CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. Jun e 28, 1913. will not get into the way of taking himself too seriously. He began to hit when Chaplin partnered him, and reached his 50 in 75 minutes-—a distinct improvement. Cox stayed with him while 70 were added in 35 minutes, Fender having two slices of luck meanwhile, missed at mid-on when 65 and at the wicket when 66. He had to go when he had reached 80, the last 76 having been made in 65 minutes. Thirteen 4’s were included. Vincett made 27 of the next 33, hitting out well. Cox carried his bat for a useful 40. At call of time Hants had lost Stone, and had 20 on the board. Hants were always struggling for runs on Tuesday, Mead alone scoring at all quickly. His 41 took 55 minutes. Jephson, usually a dasher, made a stay of 150 minutes for 61*— a very valuable innings. The total of 218 occupied 230 minutes in the making. Sussex had three down for 61 when they batted again, although Cartwright was given a couple of lives (his 33 included six 4’s); but Wilson and the elder Relf took the score to 109, and before time Fender, hitting freely but missed early, and Relf added 70 more unparted. Fender was out next morning at 204, having made 60 (one 6, seven 4’s) in 50 minutes. The partnership had added 95 in that time. Relf hit a six to square-leg, and fell over his wicket next ball in attempting to repeat the stroke. He had batted 130 minutes for his 65. The innings was declared at 272 for 8, and the visitors left to get 342 for victory. They lost Stone without a run scored, but then Sprot hit mightily and ran to 50 in 25 minutes. Fender bowled him when he had made 76, however, and did another good thing for his side by getting rid of Bowell. Of the rest only jephson did anything, and in the end Sussex won by 156 runs. Foster and Jeeves bowled so wrell after lunch that, though 230 were up with only 4 wickets down, the innings closed for 254, the tail making no sign. There was more nip off the pitch in the Warwickshire captain’s bowling than for some time past. Smith quickly made 31 ; Parsons and Quaife added 51 for the third wicket. But after Parsons’ departure for a capital 43 a slump followed, Booth taking three wickets (those of K&ker, Crockford, and Jeeves) in four balls, while Rhodes dismissed Foster. Quaife still stayed, and Santall and he made a stand which carried the score to 138 for 7 before the close. On Tuesday, when there was again a good gate, the visitors’ innings was quickly finished off for 152. Quaife was 51* after a stay of 140 minutes. On a pitch that afforded help to the bowlers nearly all the White Rose batsmen failed; but Kilner— 74 in 50 minutes, fourteen 4’s included— played great cricket and kept the crowd fairly aroar; and the colt Holmes shaped finely, he and Stanley adding 43 in quick time. Smith caught three at the wicket’ off Santall. Quaife was too unwell to field, but he batted when his side went in to get nearly 300 to win, and completed his thousand runs before getting out. In a dull light three wickets were down for 42. Parsons and Foster then added 40. Six for 86 was the state of the game a few minutes later, Kilner having made two fine catches. Crockford and Jeeves, the latter hitting out finely (two 6’s off Rhodes), added 66 in three-quarters of an hour; but at call of time 8 were down for 176. The innings closed next morning for 208, and Yorkshire won by 89 runs. First Innings. Rhodes, b Foster Wilson (B. B.), c Foster, b Taylor Denton, c Smith, b B row n............... W. Stephens were all unavailable. Holmes played again for Yorkshire in Haigh’s place. Nearly 5,000 spectators were present on the Monday, when the home side got well off the mark, and in 85 minutes before lunch scored 150 for 3. Denton made his 50 (eight 4’s) in 40 minutes; 23, 24, and 25. C. E. De Trafford At Leicester, June , 24, and 25. j turned out again after an absence of several years, and put I, and Langley, in a full and hard day’s fielding. Cook was substituted for 1Whitehead on the visiting side, who batted all day, and in spite of the loss of half-an-hour through rain, made 405 for 9 wickets. The brothers Tyldesley were chief scorers. They added 101 together in 75 minutes for the fourth wicket. The elder gave no chance till he had passed his century,
