Hornby lost the toss for the first time in nine matches. Bowley and Pearson (42) and the former and Swalwell (75) had partnerships that gave the side a good start; but there was a slump later, and only some good hitting by Burrows, whom Conway helped by staying while 43 were added for the last wicket, gave the visitors a respectable total. MacLeod’s catch in the slips dismissing Swalwell was of the electric type. Bowley batted 160 minutes, hit fourteen 4’s, gave no chance, and was at the top of his form altogether. Play was shortened by rain, and Lancashire only had a few minutes’ batting on Thursday. On the second day Makepeace played a stolid innings of 58 in 170 minutes, and Sharp a brilliant one of 64 in 75. They added 103 together. The later wickets fell quickly, and Lancashire were still 14 behind when Dean joined Heap at the fall of the ninth wicket. These two made the game a tie; then Dean tried a short one, and Pearson, dashing in, picked up and scattered his stumps by a throw that was done with a bowler’s action. The possible result of the tie was minimised by a Worcester shire breakdown in the last 75 minutes, 6 wickets falling for 67. All through the day the wicket played a trifle awkwardly, and the home side’s total was really better value than that of the visitors’ first innings. On Saturday the remaining midland batsmen played up well. Arnold and Hunt, though very slow, added 60, and Burrows again did some useful hitting. Arnold batted 120 minutes for 43, Hunt 145 minutes for 37; but the result of their doggedness was to give their side a chance. That chance looked bigger when Hornby, John Tyldesley, and Makepeace were all out 'vith only 49 scored, and bigger yet when 7 wickets were down for 84. But then Heap and Whitehead presented a plucky resistance to the triumphant Burrows, and 32 were added. Huddleston gave Heap worthy aid; 46 more were put on, and the game seemed to be slipping out of 'Vorcestershire’s grasp. Dean joined Heap with 17 !Tciu'red ; but only 5 had been added when Pearson bowled he last-comer, and at 5.15 the visitors had won an exciting s*r.u£gle by 11 runs. To Bowley and Burrows were due the chief honours; but Pearson, Arnold, and Hunt all had their snare. Dean Whitehead (R.) MacLeod Huddleston ... Heap Sharp Makepeace ... It is a trifle late now to be giving the score of this match, played at Radella, Ceylon, on March 28 and 29; but the fact that in it A. L. Gibson, of Essex, scored a century in each innings of his side makes it worth preservation. First Innings. M r . G raem e S in clair ’ s X I. Second Innings.
