Cricket 1913

332 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. Jun e 21, 1913. H . F . Lownsborough 20) and 150 (Lownsborough 38, Saunders 31, Henderson 24, Davidson 24); the latter’s 112 (T . Swann 38*, H . G. W ookey.24). Wookey (10 wickets in the two innings) bowled effectively, and the six players named may be counted certainties for the Aus tralian game, along with N. Seagram , who took 5 wickets for R e id ’s side, and Reid him self, though he did make a duck in the trial. ------------- U N I T E D S T A T E S . There were plenty o f matches in New York on M ay 30 (Memorial D ay), but in none o f them does the scoring seem to have been big, except for Richmond Coun ty’s 256 v. Manor F ield , which was big relatively, the latter side only making 54 and 33. The brothers Tu rville (West Indians, I believe) were ch ie f scorers for the winners- O . Turville 64, E . Tu rville 61. F . C. T ay lo r made 38 and E . O. Challenger 37. L . Staughton took 11 for 33 in the match. Paterson, a new team in the N .Y . and N .J . Associa tion, did well in defeating Staten Island by 22 runs. H . Jackson (35*) and H . Smith (6 fo r 24) were the chief performers for the winners. H . R . N icholl had 6 for 48 fo r the losers. F o r K in g ’s County v. Brooklyn L . R. W illiams batted nearly three hours for 4 1*, and the report is headed, “ L . R . W illia m s a S t a r . ” A fixed star, evidently ! H is side won by 157 to 6 7 ; but more credit belongs to C . A . H o yle (61 fo r 35) than to the stonewaller. In Philadelph ia Merion beat Germantown in a Philadelphia Cup game by 214 to 159. L . V . T . Thomas (65) fo r the winners, R . T . Martin (61) and J. Cauffman (42) fo r the losers, were ch ief scorers. In a H a lifa x Cup game— the premier grade, this— Merion (12 1— -J. H . Gor don, the old Oxonian, and J. R. Vetterlein each 34) beat Philadelphia (75). For the winners, H . G . Pearce had 7 for 29. S. H . H art played a good innings o f 71 for F ran kford , and W . M . Fellow s scored 3 5 ; but German town (A . G. Priestman 58*, C . M. Graham 38, H . P. Austin 36, P . H . C lark 31) won by 77 runs— 246 to 169. F o r Germantown British-Americans E . Guest retired after scoring 101, and M. Lane made 77. Apparently the two went in first together, but the report does not say how many they put on, though it says several things that could have been gleaned from the score. The side’s innings was declared at 208 for 5 ; and their opponents, the Washington Cbuntry Club, were dismissed for 69. New York Veterans (14 1— L. Camacho 46) beat H averford College 119 (Brinton 42) at Philadelphia. S O U T H A F R I C A . A team drawn from the T ransvaal, Griqualand West, and N atal toured Rhodesia in A pril, playing matches at Bulawayo, Gwelo, Gatooma, Salisbury, Um tali, and Beira. Among its members were J. H . T an d y (captain), a veteran Rand notability, E . A. H a lliw ell, the great wicket-keeper o f a few years ago, E ric Tapscott (L . E ., not L . G ., who is the Tapscott), W . V . Ling, A . W. R edick, P . D e Gersigny, and T . T . Cradock. Ivor D ifford, Secretary to the S .A .C .A ., organised the side, but was unavoidably prevented from travelling with it. T h e Matabeleland eleven at Bulawayo was captained by I,eo Robinson, who p layed for N atal twenty years or more ago. It included T . E . Bourdillon, probably the best bat in Rhodesia, one o f the K eigw ins, and other good men. M. G. L innell, B. Robinson, and Leo Robinson all made 50 or thereabouts for M atabeleland; Bourdillon played two fine innings; and D . E llio tt kept wicket capitally. The game, was drawn. A t Gwelo fifteen played for the local side, and the tourists’ bowlers reaped a harvest. Here C . T . Stuart, another old Natalian, was found keeping wicket. Cradock played a good innings of 6 4 ; but there was not much else o f interest in the match. P latt and Frames each scored over 70 at Gatooma. The Gatooma people are so keen that they had used dynamite to root up tree stumps in the out field, and the wicket was a capital one. Salisbury put a very fair side in the field, captained by Colin Duff, an old Cape Town player. Anderson, a left-hander, bowled finely (6 fo r 16), and the tourists were dismissed for 58. Salisbury won by 8 wickets, E . H . Beck batting really well. J. P . Howden made 67* in the visitors’ second effort. In a second game at Salis bury Cradock hit up 79. A t Um tali the opposition was not strong. P . J. B ird made 70 for the tourists, but was lucky. A t Beira P . D e Gersigny made 72, and S. A shley, an old Western Province man, scored 40* fo r the local side. Wickets were good everywhere. The umpiring was excellent. The enthusiasm was great at Bulawayo, a minus quantity at Salisbury, where the best ground o f all is to be found. There are (says Mr. J. H . T an d y, from an article by whom in the Johannesburg Sporting Star these notes are drawn) many young players o f promise in Rhodesia, and the old hands are very keen. Distance is naturally a big drawback, but Bulawayo and Salisbury have grown to a size at which each is able to run several teams o f its own. In other centres men come in from many miles around, but o f course matches are compara tively infrequent. ------ * B E RM U D A . On M ay 10 Hamilton defeated the St. George Garri son in easy fashion— 226 for 5 to 40. J. R . Conyers, the crack bat o f the island, hit up 13 2 *; A. West made 39, and H . J. Tucker 30.
