At Kennington Oval, June 16 and 17. Has S. H. Day ever appeared for Kent II. before? He was the one out standing figure of Monday’s play in thisi match, and, though he has often scored faster— his 135 took 200 minutes—he cannot have played many innings so essentially free from fault. There were seven doubles for Kent, but Collins was the only other man who got as far as 30. At call of time the home siide had scored 137 for 4, Alwin and Peach having made a useful fourth wicket stand. Blacklidge hit hard for 95 on the second morning, and nearly everyone else scored freely, with the result that Surrey led by 68 on the first innings. There never looked any real chance of a finish. The great feature of the afternoon’s cricket was a capital 121, made in 130 minutes with one chance at 70, by Jennings. At the very end Hickmott and Freeman lashed out at every thing, and scored at a merry pace. In the match 30 wickets realised 1,054 runs. First Innings. Capt. W. G. M. Hampshire v. Surrey. Umpires : Attewell and Whiteside. Alwiu bowled one wide. At Southampton, June 16, 17, and x8. Charles Fry did not make his expected appearance for the home side; but Kennedy turned out for the first time this season. Hayward returned to the Surrey eleven after being absent from several matches owing to an injury. On a fast wicket Surrey gave an unconvincing and not at all enter taining display. Hayes and Goatly added 127 in no minutes; but the old Honor Oak man was terribly slow, taking over three hours to get his 70. Bird played the best innings of all, 48 in 55 minutes, nine 4's included; Goatly drove hard, and hit eight 4’s; and Hitch, as usual, wasted no time. Hayes and Bird added 68 together. Jaques bowled really well, far better than his figures reveal. In three-quarters of an hour Stone and Bowell, punching freely, put up 83 unparted, Stone, though he was a trifle chancy, hitting eleven 4’s in his 51. When play was resumed on Tuesday neither batsman made another run. Thanks chiefly to Mead, Sprot, and Remnant, how ever, the home side secured a first innings’ lead. There was no really long stand; but Mead and Newman (58), Sprot and Newman (31), Brown and Sprot (50), and Remnant and Rutherford (39) all had useful partnership. Remnant cut finely, and shared the honour of top score with Stone. John Hobbs outshone everyone else when Surrey batted again. In 100 minutes he scored 109 of 166 while he was in by the most brilliant methods, one 6 (off Kennedy) and sixteen 4’s being included, and he gave only one chance (at 42). Hayes helped him to add 60, Goatly 92. At call of time Surrey led by 149, with 5 wickets in hand. Sandham was the only man to do much for the visitors on Wednesday morning, and Hants were set the moderate task of getting 232. Kennedy’s return was largely instrumental in giving them so good a chance; four of the five wickets he took were very valuable ones. Bowell and Newman soon left; but Mead and Stone stopped the rot, and after Stone’s departure for another valuable fifty the Hants champion and his captain made a further stand. For a time the home side appeared well on the road to victory, even after Mead and Sprot were both out, for Brown and Kennedy hit well, and Jaques struggled to the close. But after an intensely exciting struggle Surrey pulled through by the narrow margin of five runs. S u r r e y . Second Innings. First’Innings.
