Cricket 1913

Jttste 21, 1913. CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 3 1 5 THE SCORE-BOOK. Victoria v. Australian Team. At Oak Bay, Victoria, B.C., May 28 and 29. The home side played only eleven men, a decision to be commended, for there is always something of the mere exhibition busi ness about an odds match. They included H. R. Orr, the Bedfordshire captain of many years, and Crawford Coates, the old Philadelphian, who has had a long illness lately, but is now apparently fit again, though he went in last. L. S. V. York won the toss from Mayne, and the home side were all out for 57. Mailey’s googlies were described as “ weird.” Emery also had the batsmen tied up, and Macartney took three wickets very cheaply. Mayne and Cody, who opened for the Australians, did little; but Macartney was in form. He hit Sparks out of the ground, and made runs at a good pace. Without any score of 50, the total reached 222, Sparks bowled well. He had the distinction— for what it was worth—of sending down the only maiden over of the innings. There were five double figure scorers when Victoria batted again, and the two veterans, Orr and Coates, were among them; but the total was not much better, and the Australians won by an innings and 89 runs. Collins, Macartney, and Crawford made biggish scores, and the latter two had sensational bowling analyses. Won by an innings and 191 runs. First Innings. V a n c o u v e r an d C o w ich a n . At West Hartlepool, June 11 and 12. This was the first county match played on the West Hartlepool C .C .’s new ground, with which, to judge by the scoring, there cannot be much the matter. The visitors showed to advantage, and at the finish had the better of the draw, while annexing three points on the first innings. Day batted n o minutes for his 84, and hit a 6 and ten 4’s, and Broughton’s dashing 52 also included ten 4’s. Durham had 159 up for 3 before call of time, Hendren, Kinch, and Graham all having played capitally; but on the Thursday morning Day and Riley bowled so well that all were out for 219. VV. Rose, the Lincoln Lindum and county wicket-keeper, played an ex cellent innings for Lincolnshire, his first century for the county, and, Riley and Day also making useful scores, W. E. 'ITiompson was enabled to declare at 244 for 9, leaving Durham 150 minutes in which to get 274 for victory. At one time Durham looked certain to be beaten ; but H. 1 ,. Dales came to the rescue, and at the close, though 107 behind, they still had two wickets to fall. Dales played a great game for his side.
